Congratulations on your new phone. You'll get the hang of it in no time.
Finally, FINALLY he succumbs. Welcome to the 21st Century. Honestly, you will absolutely love it. Enjoy!

Yes, congrats on making the change... speaking as one who faced the same challenge, it is a bit of a leap, but the other side is quite nice.
Perhaps you've a young niece or nephew who can help you out?
I just "upgraded" from a standard Nokia to a wizz-bang smartphone and I spent days and days trying to figure out how to use it.

The main problems were not being able to unsintall all the "bloatware" that came with the phone, the constant notifications/updates etc.

The final straw was when I went to bed and set it to "silent" mode, it then proceeded to speak out loud "DATA CONNECTION LOST" and "NAVIGATION STOPPED". ie not so silent.

In the end I went back to the Nokia and flogged the smartphone on ebay. But the best thing is that I almost turned into one of those "zombies" constantly fidding with their phones.

Sure, the apps/maps were useful, but given that I dont play games, use facebook, twitter etc I didnt really have a need for it.
Remember it's a tool.
A new tool in any craftsman's hands feel awkward at first.
If you are finding it hard to use, I'm guessing it ain't an Iphone!

Hmmmm you're not convincing me I need to get an i-phone here!
Especially when I only use £30 credit a year, and only do about 20 texts!
Despite having my SmartPhone for a few months now I only installed the tfl live bus times application yesterday. Very good, automatically knows where I am, shows the nearest bus stops and the next buses coming along and where they are going.
I also realised I could just talk to the telephone to do a Google search, much quicker than typing.
Another application I installed today is a language translator. Say the sentence in English and the telephone will repeat it in audio and text in the language you choose.
There should be plenty of apps in your fruit based app store that use the countdown information from TFL. They use the GPS on your phone to find where you are in the metropolis. Some combine Tube departure info as well. If you are on Mile End station you can use the (currently) free wifi provided by the white bearded former hippy to access train departure info if you can't see any of the train indicators.
I love my iPhone, but just beware if / when you come to update the operating system. I did a complete backup first, so didn't lose much (my wife has twive lost photos upgrading) and it still took me hours to get back to anything like where I started. I'm sure I must be doing something wrong.

I like the Bus London app, which finds nearby stops and provides route maps.
As dg says he has a fruit related telephone we can assume what make it is, I myself use one using the Android system which I prefer.
My mobile is so ancient that it looks like an object from 1950s Soviet heavy industry. But it always works, in its simple way!
Have only just got my smartphone to start making phone calls again. Getting my phonebook back is the next priority. One day I might get it to connect to wifi again - but one step at a time..............
One London app more than any other worth loading is Citymapper - incredibly useful in bringing together all the live travel info you might need, and brilliant for plotting a walking route - and it's free. (I've no association with the developers by the way)
For actual bus departures https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bus-london/id480643687?mt=8
or simply browse for BusLondon in AppStore. Its free.
I do hate the use of "app" for applications. I blame Apple for that, I also dislike "i" placed in front of various things. BBCiPlayer, for a media player, ITV's player manages OK without the i. iPod for a portable mp3 or other audio format player. Of course I blame Apple for the "i" too!.
For those not in London, I can recommend UK Bus Checker as an alternative to London Bus.

Where realtime information on bus services is available, it will provide those (in London, it even tells you the registration number of the bus which is due!) - if there's no realtime info it will give you an estimated arrival time based upon the timetable.

Tube Deluxe is a very good Tube status/Departure board/TfL journey planner app - well worth the 69p it costs.
Just realised my use of the word "app" may have annoyed John who posted before me.

iApologise.

;-)
@Adrian....appologise?
