Yes indeed, an under-rated city.
I can't believe you didn't do any beer drinking or chip eating though. At least you can do those on a Wednesday!
What i notice is the lack of cars
I've been a reader for over a decade, off and on, not even a real beer drinker, but these Belgian Flanders Red/Brown ales are the original sours, any of the crafts I've tried just can't compare. Sorry I don't comment much, DG, or haven't in a long time.

My wife and I enjoy a bottle of the Duchess de Bourgogne every Friday evening to celebrate the end of the work week, like tonight. And nothing else compares to Rodenbach's Grand Cru. These two are the original and best of this type of beer, anywhere. I've tried others and been sadly disappointed.

Thank you for some insight into this region, DG. We may have toured this area differently due to these tastes!
Ghent was one of the highlights of a trip to Belgium in 1976. I was taken for a family wedding, by an indulgent great aunt & uncle. Amongst all the sights I was dutifully shown, the most memorable was the van Eyck.

In those days it was displayed in a quiet side chapel and it's unexpected colour and detail were quite stunning. Today it is in a glass box, surrounded by crowds, but worth the price nevertheless.

I still have the triptych postcard I bought as a souvenir.
Some glorious pictures. It does look similar to Bruges, but perhaps with slightly fewer tourists.

Some of us who like trams might not necessarily have ridden on them either, as we like looking at them and photographing them, and you cannot do that as well from inside.
Glad you enjoyed it. Trams help make a city, their mere presence does this - so they don't have to actually used by the visitor.
What a lovely city. My suggestion was based on places I have visited, and I have never been here, or Ostend. You are correct about its low profile approach to tourism: what is Gent's main claim to fame?
Ghent hurt me. Touring through there by bike last year, it managed to funnel me onto tram tracks, the inevitable happened as I tried to escape.
Good read and some rather nice pics despite last Wednesday being rather grey.

Highly recommend trying the frites next trip though...
Trams in Ghent, yes but Ghent also had Trolleybuses until 2009.
What a shame about the weather, and Wednesday, but it sounds like you had a good day just the same.
A delightful lack of cars!
There must be a lot of pollution from all those cycle lanes ;-)
Ooh, cities, architecture, bikes and beer, four of my favourite things.
in your photos Ghent looks kind of "dead" ... I wonder if it's because it's Wednesday, or because it's raining, or a combination
...or perhaps I like waiting until everybody's got out of the way before I take a photo.
Hey, Jack Hopkins, your comment of 19 June corrected for you:-
"The important thing to remember about a day trip to most European cities is: DON'T GO ON A MONDAY.
I was in Antwerp recently and all museums except one were closed.
Wednesdays aren't so great, either"
