£5,000 was a lot of money in those days, but just how much is quite interesting. If you put it in today's money using the retail price index (i.e. the rate of inflation) it is just £195,000, i.e. £195,000 today would buy the same amount of goods and services as it would then (but obviously not housing).

Even if you put it in terms of average earnings, i.e. how much would one have had to earn today to buy that in one year, it's not as much as you might think, being around £900,000. I imagine the market value even if it wasn't associated with Churchill would be rather a lot more.

One of my favouritest NT properties, that.

Go in October, just before it closes for the winter (but not in half-term week, obviously) and have the place almost to yourself.

I'm wondering what historic decisions were made by Churchill at Chartwell during the Second World War, and at other times during his political career. It would certainly be interesting to find out.

A fascinating blog post, DG.

The right man in the right place at the right time.It is said that during the war someone accused him of being a monster and he replied that it took a monster to defeat a monster.

It's a pity they don't make politicians like that anymore. Seems to me that Churchill is best remembered for his countless witticisms and quotable remarks.

How ironic that both Hitler & Churchill were painters...

Thanks for a great blogging trip.
