It's always fascinating to read DG's description of places I know well but in this case it's extra poignant as my late grandparents used to live there.
Thanks as always DG.

As a result of yesterday's post I've been following in your footsteps, at least for a couple of miles. The weather yesterday was utterly gorgeous, making wandering along the seafront and up one of the chines quite wonderful. I didn't get very far in the time I had, and with a guide dog flagging in the heat, but did appreciate both of the piers, particularly playing with the musical instruments in Boscombe.

Fellow readers might appreciate a recording of the tubular bells to go with your description. I don't know if I'm allowed to post links, but hopefully the following does the trick:

Great post, but it is a huge helium balloon - wrong shape for hot air, and no burner?

"a small river (you can guess its name)"

This being one of the times when a river is called 'river river', another being the river(s) Avon, of which the one in Bristol is about the most famous. 'Avon' being the Welsh for 'river'. I daresay your readers know of other such tautologies.
I was there last August - just as sunny but with a bisteringly cold wind along the front! Can't believe you declined to ride the Peppa Pig land train!
The Harvester at Durley Chine is not just for sunny days; was very full when I went in there an a very windy rainy day in January 2014 (my sister lives locally in Poole)- it is very much a local's choice to park there, and they go to the beach out of season to avoid the crowds!
"Bournemouth was transferred from Hampshire to Dorset, somewhat unwillingly, to avoid the anachronism of a county boundary slicing through the inner suburbs"

Not anachronism but perhaps anomaly ?

Did you intend it or was it the Speeling Chucker ?

dg writes: "Anachronism - something or someone that is not in its correct historical or chronological time." I'm happy with anachronism.

I too recognised Bournemouth as soon as the clif lifts were mentioned - used to visit my father and step-mother in Boscombe using Pokedown station.
Last time I was in Boscombe they were trying to promote surfing with a artificial reef just off the pier. They had also redeveloped the area round the pier with some new beach huts that I gather were designed by someone famous in the fashion world. I forget who this was but Boscombe was supposed to be the down-at-heel end of town!
Sorry, the balloon again - I think it is kept filled all the time, and securely tethered when the weather is inclement. I'm sure they don't add and then remove 5,575 cubic metres of helium gas every time the weather changes!
I feel another edition of Pedants Corner is overdue.

Fixed, thanks :)
DG, I have been reading your blog since pre London2012 so today's blog is extra special for me as I live in Bournemouth. I also saw the buskers in town on Monday and little did I know that DG royalty was just minutes behind me. It's great to hear your views of my town.
Pedant? I plead guilty. Sorry :*(
I love Bournemouth! As a family we spent every holiday down there as a kid, mostly in Southbourne
