How about a Kent/Sussex seaside jamjar?

Particulary look forward to Allhallows and Reculver. For me they have a certain majestic air of desolation - a bit like Camber Sands and Dungeness in winter. Not everyone's cup of tea though. And I don't think they are easily accessible by public transport so there might be some walking. Leysdown-on-Sea on the Isle of Sheppey is an experience for desolation lovers.

Suggest you insert Birchington between Reculver and Margate. Proper beaches and beach huts without the brashness of Margate (and scene of many an enjoyable family holiday at my Gran's).

I recommend adding Saltdean Lido before it gets turned into flats. Peacehaven you can probably skip. Didn't you go to West Wittering once, or am I imagining things? I can give you a long shopping list of things to see in/around Chichester, but you may prefer to explore/discover for yourself. Pagham Harbour is worth a look. And Thorney Island, which you can walk around when the tide is low, and has military history, empty eeriness, views across the harbour and lots of stories (the Cambodian "boat people" mostly ended up there before being found permanent homes).

Maybe it is time to visit a Martello Tower before they all fall into the sea. I would like to add that Canada has 11 surviving towers from the original 16 which have seen about as much action as your towers have.

I'm told Newhaven Fort is worth a good look. But West Beach is currently closed due to a dispute between the port owners (Transmanche Ferries parent company) and the town and county councils. A shame really, as it renders what could a pleasant little harbour quite useless for paddling.

You had a more interesting/busy bank holiday than I did!

haven't you done Canterbury too?

If you ever have the time to go back to Seaford, try the museum in the bowels of the Martello, it's just bonkers and wonderful. Newhaven Town Council are applying for "Village Green" status for the West Beach in order to keep it open *hooray*. To counter this the French are threatening to pull out of the port (aint gonna happen). An added attraction of Newhaven is the presence of no less than three crumbling stations. In fact the BBC were poking around last week with a cat on a stick, trying to buy a ticket for the ghost station, Newhaven Marine (radio 4 autumn). I reckon that's right up your boulevard.

i thoroughly recommend Leysdown (on Sheppey) for its strangeness, however there's not much public transport around there.

Reculver is good (on a walk between Birchington and Herne Bay) and also try Minnis Bay, and Joss Bay (the latter has the largest waves in Kent due to its position right at the tip of the Swale!)

Not recommended so much - Dartford and Gravesend. They are more Muddy River with Trolleys (but the Fort Gardens at Gravesend have a bit of history).

Perhaps the town centre will move upmarket when Asda take over the local Netto...

If I remember correctly, you have to drive down to Samphire Hoe from the A20. It's quite nice down there and you do see some nice butterflies/scenic views, and the odd train to/from Folkestone as it's right next to the railway line. The only other thing to see there are the beer-bellied shirtless men fishing. :X

And you're so very right, Dover's a shithole. I might have grown up there, but so far it's been almost two years since I went back.

Quote: "lovely view, except it was of Folkestone"
Hmmm. LMAO
