The Guardian offices were built on the site of 1865’s Corporation Buildings, built by the City of London as the first model council housing development. I passed the site twice daily cycling along Ray Street for many years before learning my father had lived there when young. Curiously, I can find no photograph of it. Postmark offends me; viewed from the old Times building there used to be a superb sunrise, the City towers and spires backlit in glory. Looking down, the ancient contours of the Fleet valley were laid out below, under the undeveloped Post Office parking lot running the length of Phoenix Place. Cecil Osbourne’s painting Sunday Morning Farringdon holds a fascination for me and given the lighting, the view could well be of Corporation Buildings.

Fascinating. We should stop more often and consider what the terrain was like before we came along digging, constructing and tunnelling.

I walked some of this on Monday, having been inspired by your post on the lost rivers exhibition at Islington Museum to take a half day of leave to catch the exhibition before it ended. Afterwards, I fancied walking the route of the Fleet for a bit, despite not being certain where it flowed north of Farringdon. I could have done with this post then!

I remember a secondhand booksellers in Farringdon Road near the junction with Clerkenwell Road.
