And Elm Park should precede Elmers End - another tram stop.
The Song Of The TfL Office Clerk
by W.T.McGonagall

I am a lowly office clerk
I work for TfL
I have to check the paper maps
They're free (they're not for sale)

My job is very boring
So to spice it up a little
I jumble up the station lists
At the top, the end, and in the middle.

My joy will overflow next year
My pleasures they are simple
I'll put Iver before Ilford
And Taplow after Temple!
I have lost too many hours of my life trying to get different TfL naming of stations to align in excel with other TfL spreadsheets of names (or other organisations naming).

In lots of the databases Acton mainline has mainline in brackets.

The two most annoying naming issues/errors were Blackhorse Lane tram stop often being called Blackhorse Road and also general annoyance of there being two Bethnal Green stations in different locations.
@Flare shows one possibility for the source of the errors...either that, or, someone doesn't understand letter-by-letter and word-by-word filing conventions. (or their alphabet).
When the first stage of Crossrail eventually opens, the two stations that will need to be added to the map should be second, and second from last, in the index. Although on recent form it wouldn't be surprising if they were to appear in first and last places.
Is total perfection too much to ask?
Maybe the editing software needs you to click on a line and then do paste/insert and it adds the new one after it.
But the person editing thought it added before it.
Or something like that.
how hysterically funny that even all the nerds missed this ... how did you find out DG, was it by yourself or did someone else alert you
I can't spot any pattern to the error. Most of the new stations are added correctly, so it feels like human error. And nobody noticed until now?

Perhaps it does not matter very much; a nice to have rather than a must have: something to sort out next time.

But clearly TfL needs a diligent proofreader. I believe there is one available, living near Bow Church (Stop M).
You make it sound as if the 'house rule' is a quirk, but surely it's standard lexical practice that nothing/space precedes 'a'?
Any bonus points for spotting errors in your own article?
Tube should always have a capital 't' when referring to the London Underground!

dg writes: That's according to TfL's style guide, not mine.
Being very pedantic, according to TfL's rules, Heathrow Terminal 4 (and Heathrow Terminal 5) should come before Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3.
There are two conventions regarding the treatment of spaces.

i) assuming words have no spaces
ii) recognising spaces, and alphabetising by first word

Before May 2015, TfL did the former
('a' precedes 'space').

Since May 2015, they've done the latter
('space' precedes 'a').

Their choice.
Meanwhile, over on the step free access map they have put Tower Hill before Tower Gateway.
@great king rat

So it should, and I've only just realised why.
I've never looked at the index anyway. About time the pocket map was scrapped, the print is now ridiculously small.
>>The error is right there in the first handful of stations. Have you spotted it yet?

No, but whoever designed the index should never be allowed anywhere near publishing ever again. Not only do they appear to be unable to align the text in each column consistently, but the column headings appear to be a in a smaller font! The result is a very untidy looking mess. I'm aghast at how unprofessional it looks.
I disagree with Sir Biton about scrapping the map. I see lots of tourists using it, and since mobile phones don’t work on the deep tube, it’s often their only option.

But since DG likes us to stick to the subject, I doubt whether many disoriented tourists are that bothered about how the stations are listed...
Baldassaro - not even tube geeks are that bothered. That most of the errors DG found were years old shows that.
Interestingly there is a mistake in the online map index that's been there since May. It's in the Ps and it's not to do with alphabetization.
Please, someone explain 'great king rats' ordering of Tower Hill before Tower Gateway. It's driving me crazy.
Did any other DG fans smile to themselves when they read "There's a problem with the Beck's"?

Unless DG is giving us a veiled hint towards a drinking problem, but I doubt that's the case.
Gregg - Yes, there is Step-free access from street to TfL Rail platform. It says so on the other side of the map !
