I remeber going to Dreamland when it was called Bembom Brothers. I have never been one for fast rides so I thought with a name like the Scenic Railway it would be a nice gentle ride, how wrong I was.
It has no relevance to this posting but it's mildly interesting to know that Carl Andre's uncle was Raymond Baxter, 'off of' Tomorrow's World.
Many years ago I lost my wallet on a ride in Dreamland - it had two precious tickets to the World Speedway Final in it along with all the usual stuff. The ride operator kindly stopped the ride and took the seats out of the car to find it for me - top man!
I seem to recall dg having been to Margate before. I too went to the coast on Sunday to a place dg visited and after reading his blog I put on my "to do" list, namely Canvey Island.
Like Barry I also remember going to Dreamland when it was owned by the Dutch Bembom brothers..
I have just finished reading an interesting book about Atlantic City. Now, you may well ask, what does a town on the eastern seaboard of the USA have in common with Margate? Two words - decay and hope.
I remember getting wristbands for Dreamland over 10 years ago... or the amusement park at Folkstone - ah the memories. Took me back to the 60's when we had our annual weeks holiday in Margate with the big treat being Dreamland and the scenic railway. I do hope that they manage to re-open but worry that the Brits won't go. I take my mum down to Margate a few time a year - we take bikes and pedal round the town - stopping for fish and chips on the front at £2.99 recension buster... Peters IIRC. I don't think you could find a sandier beach for miles around - shame about all the B & B's with 'no DSS' signs and I read bad reviews of the Nayland Rock hotel which looks slightly tatty but with a great view - I think DSS has taken it downhill - I guess people have to have a income and the state pays regularly. One day I will go to a show at the Winter Gardens... I like Thanet.
Forgot to say...great to read the word 'speedway' on any forum - its still a underrated sport but troubled by local authorities not wanting anything 'noisy' in towns so banished to countryside. Used to go to Canterbury occasionally till a local resident kept complaining - after he move near the the stadium - I think its a supermarket now. Ah the memories of world finals at Wembley - till that was stopped by the FA not being happy about the corners of the pitch. Used to be loads of stadiums holding the sport but now down to none inside the M25 - sorry I digress...
Ah the Bembom brothers at Dreamland, we used to love it when we lived in Kent, the last time we went the Ghost Train broke down and we had to walk through the tunnel !

The front of the building is listed, and I always thought the roller coaster was, but may be not.

PS we support the people who are trying to restore the site by adding a link to them on our UK tourist website, every little helps !
I made a couple of return visits to this part of the Kent coast last year, with thoughts of childhood holidays with Mum and Dad. I revisited Westgate, where the hotel we stayed at used to be; I spent a fair amount of time exploring Margate itself; I took a walk as far as Cliftonville. I'm afraid going back there was a sad experience and the impression I came away with was that Margate seemed pretty much dead on its feet.
Also, towards the end of last year, I found myself near Southend, so I paid a visit there as well. After the disappointment of Margate I wasn't expecting much, but I was totally amazed by the changes around the town since I'd last been there. It reminded me, in parts, of Leamington Spa (which is meant as a compliment).
I've since learned that Southend has been the subject of a massive (multi-million) regeneration scheme. In short, it shows.
Sadly, I don't think any amount of money - and certainly not the budget of a few thousand quid, made available to Mary Portas - will have any chance of making much difference to Margate.
I went to Dreamland in the 60's when I was 17. One of the attractions was the woman with no head. She was supposedly kept alive by tubes of coloured liquid being pumped into her body. It gave me nightmares. There were other strange sideshows, midgets and a bearded woman, and I went on the rickety roller coaster too.
Apparently Dreamland is reopening today!
