Interesting that the retired army veteran raised twice as much for the NHS as the Duke of Westminster ostentatiously 'donated' the week before. Noting also that while the general public chipped in handsomely thanks to the retired captain, the Duke avoided paying inheritance tax on his vast property portfolio.

With all respect due to anyone (however rich or poor) donating money to charity, the annual NHS budget last year was around £130 billion - that is, about £350m each day. To put it another way, £5 or £6 per person every day.
