IF THERE IS ANY FURTHER ERRORS REPORTED IN TODAYS' COMMENTS, THEN THIS BLOG WILL IMEDIATELY BE PLACED INTO ENFORCED HIATUS.
Morning Joan - 11 minutes late due to misspelling of non-existent words.
Phew, that took a long time to read as there were so many errors...

I know that English is not my best subject but surely it is:

IF THERE ARE ANY FURTHER ERRORS..
Surely...."If there are any further errors....." or "If there is any further error....."?
Ken.......snap!
THIS BLOG WILL IMEDIATELY BE PLACED INTO ENFORCED HIATUS.
"Immediately"

You old tease. And I am still trying to understand how something can be "placed into enforced hiatus". That's just strong-sounding word soup.
I thought you were just trying to qualify for a job as a journalist on the Guaradian
Well, at least this shows that your readers DO read your blog very thoroughly.
Sorry. Your writing is of course excellent, but no one is perfect. God knows, I make enough mistakes every day, and I don't write public material that is crawled over by hundreds of pedants, nerds and transport buffs (these categories are not mutually exclusive). I am sure the cataract of nit-picking must be somewhat annoying. You could always disable the comments...

I could mention the apostrophe, but I won't.
Well, it's 100% perfect. Obvs.
Imediateley- LOL !
Dear DG, thank you for the chuckles this morning, they have brightened Wednesday considerably. ( I hate Wednesdays.) P.s. to where do I apply for a refund? 😉 😂
How about violations of the rule that every correction must itself contain an error?
I think a yellow poster is needed.
BEWARE YOU ARE APPROACHING A BLOG
You're such a card DG..!
Albeit an occasionally slightly touchy one!
Time for a nice hot cup of tea me thinks
I thought there had been a higher degree of pedantry in the comments than usual. Who do they think cares?

It seems likes it’s an attempt to contribute without having anything interesting to say.
I was a technical writer for many years. I can't help noticing little things.
Also when I started TW I rapidly learned that no matter how many times I checked my own writing there'd still be errors in it.
We would all swap our stuff around and get someone else to check it before publishing.
You do very well indeed DG for making so few errors.

And as someone said, it's a rule that every correction will itself contain an error.
Surely, the day 11 correction requires correction. "There's fewer of them" should be "There are fewer of them".
@Theo (9.08) - surely there's no clearer an example of that which you accuse others of.
This is the mystery count folks. Days no-one points out an error.
@Frank F (9.22) - your comment is a far better example ;)
Sat vs. sitting is an interesting one.

I personally say "sitting", but I know many people who say "sat" and I don't have a problem with it. It is merely a dialectal variation.

Google is full of internet arguments about why one or the other must be wrong. Some pages say "sat" is a Northernism, but I've heard Southerners say it too and I think DG counts as one.

As a subscriber to the descriptivist school of thought, if enough users of English express themselves in a certain way, I believe that it becomes correct, since English is an evolving language with no central authority. As much as things like "could of would of" annoy me, they may eventually become accepted usage.

One argument for enforcing rules is that it reduces misunderstandings, but in the case of sat vs. sitting, there is no way that anyone could misunderstand.
Ah, DG a master of the art of gentle satire. You made me laugh today.

P.S. Yesterday DG took 27 buses journeys in a single day. Looking forward to seeing what that turns into!
Your blogs are so varied in content and approach, usually producing a chuckle or two, that I find them a compelling read. I’m not especially disturbed by mistakes, even jarring grammatical accidents that produce hiccups in the flow of text. Many thanks for your continued production of informative blogs; please feel free to ignore ombudspeople.
"Placed into enforced hiatus" should be incorporated into station announcements.
LMAO
Let him who is without grammatical errors cast the first apostrophe .... or something like that!
✉ An anonymous commenter immediately spotted a problem with the last bit (in italics) - "Alternatively money can be can donated here..." The extra "can" was deleted before the majority of readers ever saw it.

Why was the relevant comment (mine, in case you were interested) deleted?

Also, I'm not sure but isn't the "ever" wrong usage?
(sigh)
you reference errors from previous years ... do you keep a log of complaints DG ?
@Anon
I have no issue with comments being deleted, but in February?..
I sincerely hope you are joking on the hiatus stuff, as I am eager to know how your Feb count goes in the end!
And not a single less/fewer abuse noted either. Must be because I'm not here.
As an occasional victim of the silent snip, may I (unless snipped) say that, despite an immediate feeling of "Oh", I do generally appreciate the improved comment flow resulting from DG's deployment of this tool, for whatever reason.
"Martin apologised for pointing out a infuriating grammatical construction"

Shouldn't that be "... an infuriating ..."?

dg writes: That took five hours.
Don't go!!! - Please!!!! I came here twice today and saw a "blog error" and assumed you had already taken it offline!!!!
Perhaps DG is looking for an excuse to score for the first ever on the Mystery Count - days missed blogging (through enforced hiatus or otherwise)?
No wonder we lost The Empire.
A splendid example of 'you said - we did' which will inspire me as I collate responses to student evaluation feedback and external examiners' reports.

And you thought it was a joke.
Is this going to be a prime example of people seeing a warning of a dire consequence (blog hiatus in this case) if they do something (comment on an error) printed in big red capital letters (twice), but they still can't stop themselves from doing the something?

dg writes: This. Precisely this.
It's very easy to criticize. It's much harder to create (well). If DG's overall quality wasn't very high, we wouldn't all be coming back day after day.

DG's articles are all of the longer form. Errors are inevitable in articles of such length.

As someone once said: Don't let the *&#@* get you down.
Maybe people who point out grammatical or spelling errors be required to do a month of proof reading correcting everything before 8am. Anything missed or unnecessarily corrected to be punished - maybe a bottle of Becks per transgression sent to DG.
Satirical use of apostrophe's, I see!
As a pedant/perfectionist I am not sure that DG does dislike getting feedback on typos/grammar.
The Kent Messenger once ran an interview with a soldier who was described as '...a battle-scared veteran.'

It was corrected the next day to '...bottle-scarred veteran.'

They gave up.
It takes humility and a healthy sense of self-knowlegde to admit mistakes.

And that's all they are, b***** mistakes, and merely grammatical ones, not life-threatening errors of judgement.

If DG didn't write so consistently well, in a variety of styles (sympathetic, mildly exasperated, resigned, informative, sceptical and many more), all perfectly fitted to his subject of the day, it would be extremely petty to offer a correction.

His genius is to have written a complete and entertaining blog entry about them.
I feel privileged to have a correction highlighted in point 2 (Fullwell)!
An announcement is needed

WHEN BROWSING AROUND THE BLOG, PLEASE DONT FAIL TO MAINTAIN CONCENTRATION AND PLEASE HOLD YOUR DEVICE WHEN USING THE WEBSITE
"TODAYS' COMMENTS" - Today's comments, surely?
See it. Say it. Sorted.
I didn't get where I am today by misspelling non-existent words.
Listen, as long as the blog doesn't espouse the use of the promiscuous exclamation point, it's all right (or alright) by me.
I nevver complane abowt peeples spellin misstakes becoz I okayzionly right wordz rong two:
...and this is exactly why we read DG.
haha, thought I'd spelled (that's right isn't it?) reins wrong. Thank god I'm not a blogger, my writing would be a mess.
I remember the boy from memory, not easy to spot though.
I like your box.
I recently ran across these words/phrases for nitpicker or pedant. Good for a few chuckles. You'll need to do the googling yourself :)
'mierenneuker' Dutch
Danish 'flueknepper'
French 'enculeur de mouches'
It’s five past seven on the morning after .. no post! He meant it! He’s gone!!

(This comment has been spell checked)
Oh no . Gutted if that's true Geoff tech ...
Hiatus gonna hiate.
The presumed use of the modifier 100% prior to the word ‘perfection’ is unnecessary and superfluous. Perfection means 100% accuracy.
Help! I need my DG fix!
Lets start a new topic. 'Train Station' or 'Railway Station'? I have a friend, who is a railway enthusiast, who explodes if I say the former.
Geofftech - sometimes posts come up at 0800. I always check!

Anyway, haven't you got a station to get to or have you been to them all?
Er, oh....
Missing my fix here!
I suggest a protest march to the building where the ombudsmen are located... anyone know where OFPED have they're office's..??
I reckon he's done a Reggie, and left his clothes in a pile at the Royal Albert Dock
Frank - A short ride from Bus Stop M I believe. Er, I hope that is ironery at the end....
Or an FOI request to the ombudsman to find out how long or by what criteria the hiatus is intended to last
Could the 'mystery count 'be days blog didn't appear'? And this would be the first instance?
Come back, DG. All is forgiven. Yours is is one of the only blogs I like to read ;-)
I hope you're enjoying some time off DG.
Come back! You and the BBC are the only webpages I look at every day.
My bet is that we'll get an update at 11:59p.m.

But seriously, please lighten up a bit, DG. They're not criticisms, just appreciative readers offering helpful observations.

Embrace pedantry !
OMG, HELP! I'm going 'cold turkey', I need my daily fix... what's happening?
I do hope you come back DG.

I promise not to nitpick in future (I thought you liked the nitpicking, you always fix the errors so quickly).
DG, where are you? Oh, what are we to do without you?
genuinely shocked. It's like the sun hasn't risen this morning. Has this ever happened before?
Oh no, we've broken our favourite thing.

I think DG knows how much we love him. I hope so.

Last Sunday I walked a section of the North Downs Way only because of DG's blogs last summer about it. I could point to many examples of how I follow in his footsteps some while later and many more examples of just enjoying reading about his perambulations.

Oh, and trains, don't forget the trains, trains are very important.
Has anyone checked whether the ravens are still in post at Tower of London or is that pointless because, as I suspect, DG's disappearance is the clearest sign yet of an imminent collapse of society. Obviously the warning signs were there in 2017, I just wish I'd been digging my fallout shelter earlier.
we love you DG, truly we do
First Brexit, then Trump, now this. 😱

Let's all write a paragraph each about Bus Stop M. Who wants to start?
Where do we stand on doughnuts now? Better with holes, or without?
I'll say one thing for DG he certainly knows how to get his comment count up. First one day do a post about errors and spelling mistakes and you get loads of people commenting. Then next day don't post when expected and you get loads more comments on the post from the day before asking where today's post is.
Come on guys, obviously DG planned this all along.
😥
Right, I'll do the first paragraph Geoff.

Bus Stop M is a bus stop in Bow Road, London. in 2016 it was bypassed by Cycle Superhighway 2. The bus stop, whilst otherwise of no interest to anyone, has become of interest due to the amount of attention given to it by the "Diamond Geezer" blog.
you start Geofftech - maybe you should write a paragraph about Bow Road though
Have a good break.
We all miss you!
He'll crack before we do, his life revolves around this blog. Have a nice break!
Maybe the mystery count is the number of February blog entries attracting more that 100 comments?
TFL and Network Rail do at least try to keep us informed of the extent of each hiatus. ( I avoided using hiatus in the plural as I don't know what that is )
Kev

Hiati I think, or is that a country?
@Kirk

Only a few metres (or yards if you're a Brexiteer) from Bus Stop M is 215-7 Bow Road, an otherwise unremarkable building on the site of a house once belonging to Lord Edmund Sheffield, a naval officer who fought against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Until a few years ago, there was a plaque commemorating this fact, but it is no longer there following the site's latest redevelopment. Such is the nature of progress as time marches on.

@100andthirty | 07.02.18 - 7:18 a.m.

Surely...."If there are any further errors....." or "If there is any further error....."?

Either way:

"If there be any further . . ."

--------------
And, DG, enjoy your break but come back soon.......
DG set himself a very high standard and we were indulging, dare I say, I a little banter as is the Romans of comments generally on this site. If DG committed the sins against the English language perpetrated by the printed media, we have real cause to complain.

In summary....come back DG, all is forgiven!
Noooooooooo!
Not even a picture of a kitten?

Still hoping something appears before midnight. It's like the stars have fallen from the sky! :(
OMG. I'm in a different time zone at the moment and the 2nd thing I do when I get up is to check out DG.

DG is of course playing us. I shall check in later when back from the beach.
If this is for real can we get all DG's ringer followers together and go for a half muffled quarter at St Mary's Bow Road?
The thing is, the boring pedants are going to continue posting their corrections regardless of what anyone else says.

They're unstoppable and don't realize just how dreary and life sucking they are to any creative activity.

And yes that includes if you're doing it 'jokingly'.
I still have http://londondailyphoto.blogspot.co.uk/ and http://www.tiredoflondontiredoflife.com/ on my "check regularly" list, just in case either of them comes back.

Thank heavens Ian Visits is still going strong... for now.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
I was thinking of lighting a candle at bus stop M, but it’s a bit too windy.

I’d hardly categorise myself as a pedant but am sincerely sorry if I was one of the straws that happened to add to the load which broke the camel’s back.
Does anyone know where the refund link is?
drD, you were sent details when you paid your subscription....
As usual, a small minority has spoiled everyone's fun. Tsk. DG, we hope you're alive and well.
Currently standing at bus stop M with a box of candles
Maybe he's started a new job as editor of the Grauniad... ;)
Talk about attention seeking, or manufacturing a way to get some time off ;)

(don't worry folks, I can *guarantee* that he can't give it up)

Thing is, if the February Count is now '1' we still won't know what it is that caused it... was it us playing his game, or him doing something that caused him not to be able to blog?
RogerB

Can I have treble or tenor? I'm out of practice!
sometimes it best not say a word
My post at 1:10 on 08/2/18. I have a rather manic autocorrect on my tablet, so sorry for the strange use of the word Romans. The thing is I can't remember what I meant to say
Hmmm. What way will he go.... Will he break his magnificent run and miss a day which I suspect would be very hard. Or will he miss a day just to prove he can.

I think it would be dangerous to leave it until 11.59pm in case there was a problem but 11pm would allow him to break the silence at the 11th hour. And we know he likes a phrase.

Personally I hope you post DG. It is a magnificent run and I don't want you to break it. Or if you ever break it, it is for your own positive reasons.
Have been out all day (on trains/stations), am heading to Bow now though. Is anyone still at Bus Stop M? i've popped into Morrisons and bought a candle, so we can continue the vigil, i presume until 11.59pm tonight
If DG has been seeking a new job (if that's what you want), then maybe today was the day he started, and there are some things more important in life than blogging, or in our case reading them.

Otherwise, I do recall when there was once no post until late in the day, can't recall the entry though.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old blogs should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the streak.
I love this blog, and the comments are always worth reading too. 63 new ones since I checked in this morning, but they hardly compensate for the lack of DG today.
CIRCULAR BUS STOPS

I asked a lot of you at the beginning of the year for new features on this blog. My favourite to come out of them is 'circular' bus stops, where i put 26 letters into a jam jar, and once a week pull out one letter.

I then visit the bus stop with that letter that is nearest to my house, and investigate what is within a 10 metre radius of it and report back to you.

Something historic, something pretty, something sporty.

I've just pulled out the first letter, and it's ... "M" !! Would you believe it.

A short report on what's within 10 metres of my local bus stop coming up. I do hope it's more than just paving slabs with discarded McDonalds wrappers.
DG Please don’t go. We need you.
Oh Where, Oh Where
by W.T.McGonagall

My heart is sore, my eyes they sob
Oh where, Oh where, is DGs blog?
So many voices out there cry

But is there more than meets the eye?
Some fiendish scheme perhaps, I ask?
Finally a pic of DG - in a mask!
Welcome to the internet in the 21st century. If you didn’t want comments you should have made a closed blog.
Hope yiz are sorry now.
Oh dear it's getting late. Should I worry?
Reading only comments is just not the same. I'm worried about how long this will continue. We can't blame DG, he did warn us.
@ RogerB and Andrew S - it *has* to be

Diamond Surprise Major

And yes, it does exist.
NO!!!
Have checked a couple of times and still do DG.....
I meant still "no" DG, not "do" DG, obviouslt. I see how hard this writing-and-not-making-mistakes lark is now.
HEY.. it's after 10 PM GMT and still no Diamond fix. I'm in the USA. How will I ever find out what's going on at bus stop M ????
People just need to be patient and have faith, he's just toying with us... or perhaps he's still checking his latest post for mistakes?
A regular high point on Terry Wogan's R2 breakfast show was the listener interaction featuring mutual wind-ups.

Andrew in Andrewshire: "I was sat sitting in the garden when..."

TW: "No Andrew you weren't sat anywhere. You were sitting or quite possibly you were seated."

A subsequent hailstorm of listeners' sat-sitting contributions would make those mornings a joy; who was teasing who the most?

That ombudschap, I wouldn't want his job.
The Blog Ombudsman warned us and we didn't listen. This calimity is 100% our fault.
One hour to go.

I cannot believe a day will be missed.

Please, prove me wrong DG.
I'm hoping for a post at 23:59 consisting of "I wasn't kidding." - or, perhaps, just a full stop.

Very fine blogging as performance art in any case!
DG says: ...
Looks like I was right first time, DG's Next Post will be at 11:59pm !
Well... At least there were no errors today.
I'd laugh if the Mystery Count turned out to be days on which no blog post was made and wound up being non-zero this year as a result.
Nothing....

THE WORLD HAS ENDED
Oh dear, this time DG really has taken his football home with him...

Great shame, because I believe there's really nothing wrong with a bit of friendly Crowd Pedantry© making a great blog even better !
What a shocker! Do any DG aficionados know if he's ever missed a day before?

dg writes: Yes, particularly over Christmas.
DG Please don't go. I was looking forward to your random stations surrounding area. As an expat Londoner living in Australia your blog was the one to cut through the crap and to really describe things in your area. Your walks were great.
Well, perhaps DG is going to be a bit kinder to himself. Fewer posts and not made against deadlines that don’t permit time for repeated proof reading may be the way forward. He doesn’t owe anyone an immaculate 2000 word post daily.

Or he could, as someone suggested, just switch comments off. The nature of his blog will attract a critical readership, and he himself is not uncritical of the faults of others - Stop M for instance.

Hope he is back in some form after whatever break he needs.
Alternate theory: the illustrious Mr DG is taking an enforced break for surgery. Possibly a hiatus hernia.

I hope he feels better soon and resumes his daily dose of information and entertainment, which I, for one, am very much missing. (We already have enough other situations where the views of an idiotic minority who just can[']t help themselves mess up everything for everyone else...)

dg writes: Spoiler: he already has.
