The Rio cinema Dalston has "Classic Matinees" about once a month, £2.50 for over 60's includes tea/coffee and biscuits.
The BFI has "Senior Screen" film shows at its Southbank complex. These are either free admission or a reduced price. Not so cheap but £6.00 the Regent Street Cinema has weekly Monday Classic Matinees, which once a month includes the Compton cinema organ being played before the show |
Hi Diamond Geezer, you got a shoutout in Tweedy Pubs YouTube video where he tries to find out which London Road has the most pubs.

Unbelievably, you get 25p extra a week on your state pension when you get to 80! Before tax.
Introduced in 1971 in recognition of “the special claims of very elderly people who on the whole need help rather more than others”, and never increased since. |
I wonder how much it costs Newham Council Tax payers to identify and then distribute Vitamin D to the over 60s! A year's supply can be got for about £6 retail.

Over 60: More points on the Boots Advantage card
State Pension Age: £10 Christmas bonus |
The existence of all these benefits, except as a marketing strategy, seems highly questionable to me these days, as in recent years due to predominantly generous treatment of retirees by the governments, Pension income has risen far faster than wages.
For most working people, a "triple lock" on their salary is a distant dream. And that is only considering cash income. My retired parents are wealthier than I will ever be, even though my first salary after graduation was more than my father earned at any point in his whole career as a chartered engineer, simply because of the possibility to make property purchases, starting with my mother buying a flat in London aged 21 on a trainees salary, something unimaginable today. |
At state pension age you receive the £10 Christmas Bonus - if they haven't discontinued it by then. That'll buy you a few Double Deckers!
|
I think DG is going to hold out for the Dial-A-Ride membership.
|
it's free to swim at leisure centres in Hackney, post-60. i'm not sure about Newham, sorry.
|
State pension age: exemption from National Insurance payments.
|
My local barber gives a significant reduction for over-60s Mondays to Thursdays, avoiding the rush to have your hair cut on Friday ready for the weekend (something I never indulged in even in my youth!).
|
Yes, the £10 pensioner's christmas bonus is automatically paid mid December every year.
There are many organisations which offer "senior's discount"; for example the National Trust and the Courtald Gallery. The free eye test pays for a standard eye examination, however many opticians recommend and up sell additional tests and imaging. |
To be fair given their demographic the national trust senior price is probably the default, everyone younger effectively just pays a supplement.
|
My local independent cinema offers a seniors rate at 55. Which for me is in 5 years time so that has made me feel very old, when I still feel quite young. But then does anyone feel old if they're still in decent health? My Mum turns 80 next year and she keeps saying that at one time she thought that was decrepit but it doesn't seem it now.
|
Looking forward to the future government that axes the £10 Christmas bonus due to it being "unaffordable" before I get to state pension age.
|
At 76 - no longer liable to be summoned for jury service.
|
Most barbers also have reduced prices for 'seniors'.
|
The 'At 65' slot was looking a bit bare so here's one - you become eligible for a shingles vaccine!
|
At 75: Free TV licence, but must be in receipt of Pension Credit.
At 80: An extra 25p per week on the State Pendion (unchanged since 1971!). |
Many local barbers offer concessions. Over 65s get a cut for a tenner rather than 15 pounds at my local barber.
|
Has anyone mentioned haircuts yet...?
|
I can't thank you enough for the Dial-A-Ride link because it also included a link to Taxicard - something I have never heard of before.
My Mum is planning on leaving the house for the first time in almost a year after a life-changing incident left her completely immobile, and mentioned to me just today that she would probably need to hire a special taxi to get her to the event she wants to attend! |
The story of the £10 Christmas Bonus is that Ted Heath wanted to pay it as a once off bonus in December 1972. The Treasury, however, said 'NO, we can't afford it. So, in a Prime Ministerial Broadcast covering other matters, Heath announced that it would be paid. Cue massive panic in the Treasury snd the DHSS who had to work out how to pay it in time for December 25th 1972.
Heath repeated the stunt in 1973 and 74. It has never been increased, and would be worth £120 ish now if it had been increased in line with inflation since |
Islington Council offers free swimming once you reach 60.
Just got to motivate myself to get along there! |
No wonder the country is broke. Greedy entitled retirees
