Thanks for this. I hadn’t been aware of either the plaque or the plan to replace the shops (although the latter doesn’t surprise me, since just about everything is being redeveloped in that area). I’ll wander round for a look sometime.
I discovered this street on the day the NLE opened. Had no idea this was where My Beautiful Launderette was filmed. That's why I love this blog.
This simple post has a rare quality - charm. Thank you.
Those new flats look a whole lot more attractive than the typical stuff Nine Elms tube was built to serve - modest in scale, simple finishes, and a nod back to inter-war LCC styles. It’d be nice if the outer skin was in proper bricks, rather than slips. We shall see.
I can't say it was a life changing movie for me, but it had a very positive effect. Every time I drink champagne, rarely, I think of the alternative way it could be served, rather than in a glass. I think it predated two other great English/Indian films, Bhaji on the Beach and Sami and Rosie get Laid. Post the Kumars at No. 42, there hasn't seemed to be anything since.
Andrew - 'Four Lions' is worth a look. and 'East is East'.
I watched this film many many many years later but I was still touched by its depiction of a mixed race same sex relationship. Almost unbelievable that this was produced in the mid 80s!
Wonderful to see this - when the film was shown at Brixton's Ritzy Cinema an enormous cheer went up at the first sight of every nearby location, including this one! Whilst puzzled about when, exactly, a launderette became a "laundrette", it is still more puzzling why a Wandsworth forum would put a plaque up, when Wilcox Road is firmly in Lambeth territory. More pressingly, I wonder what will become of the two impressive bollards adjacent to William Hill - I can't see any sign of them in the artist's impression of the new streetscene.
Great little post - I too went for a mooch around there on the second day of the tube extension opening and thoroughly enjoyed the first class Portugese tarts available in local bakeries. (and thanks again for pointing out the film venue !)
There is a design competition open until 17 February to submit a proposal which "animates Wilcox Road in Lambeth and transforms it into a welcoming gateway to the newly opened Nine Elms Tube Station." Whatever that might mean.
Another cookie cutter estate with shops to out-price the locals... Seems like the way outside of Plaistow station is going.

Its mentioned on the architect site that this was a 'fictional launderette' does this mean it has never been used as a real launderette?

And will these shops have homes back in these new buildings?

More and more of these type of normal streets, (not perfect/ tatty but independent shops) that cater for the community are becoming rare.
