Telford’s always stuck in my mind as the home of the replica Big Breakfast house they gave away as a competition prize in the 90s.... and until this morning that was all I knew about Telford!
At least Telford can pride itself on not being Milton Keynes.
I like novelty public clocks. I think London still has the old Swiss Centre clock in Leicester Square.
As a child my favorite was the Guinness Clock in Battersea Pleasure Gardens.
I didn't realise that Telford was a new town.
I worked on the building of that shopping mall (and what is now Blists Hill museum) in the early 70's. One of the earliest shops to open in the mall was one of the first Carrefour "hypermarkets" in England.
I revisited the area a few weeks ago to see the house I owned in Horsehay. The village itself has been bypassed but otherwise remain just as it was then, except for the developments around its edges.
Any idea as to how many of the shops in the centre are closed? I always think closed shops within a centre are more of a negative than those outside, usually there you can see further.
Sounds like town without a heart, built for a soulless society.
It does sound strikingly similar to Milton Keynes. From the point of view of someone passing through, at least. Which I can report, having lived there, certainly displays every sign of having plenty of heart.
Thankyou so much for this, DG. I almost feel as if I have been there - so no need to divert there to have a look, on my cycle trip to Shropshire. Whenever the world returns to normal, and I can go, that it is...!
I didn't know Telford was in Shropshire!
I helped organise a work event in Telford's conference centre last year and found it all quite soulless. Most of the attendees got lost trying to find their way through the business park and shopping centre en route from the station to the event.

I prefer Milton Keynes but in both I've been told the suburbs, whilst a bit samey, are quite nice places to live.
I once went to Telford to watch a football match but the place has left zero impression in my memory!
Ive only been to Telford once and the only thing I remember is the frog in the shopping centre.
I love a novelty public timepiece. I wonder if there is a public record of all of them still in existence.
Re the Frog Clock, I thought you were going to say it croaks each hour on the hour!
And still no one has mentioned Thomas Telford!
