"It's pleasant enough, although you wouldn't come for the scenery .... And you wouldn't come for a day trip either"

I disagree! Aldenham Country Park is covered by Section 10 of the London Loop, and is a real delight - particularly with Pooh Corner and many fascinating carved logs near the reservoir. I certainly plan to redo that section again at the first opportunity.

That "busy roundabout barely troubled by pedestrians" was a nightmare to cross though!
Pedestrian unfriendly roundabouts are a common feature in this area, the one at Stirling Corner is a bit of a nightmare too.
I lived in Borehamwood for sixteen years and was fascinated by it's film history. On the Buses was filmed locally, one scene featured Manor Way just round the corner from where I lived. Several scenes of The Saint were filmed in both Elstree and Borehamwood. The Queen video for Bohemian Rhapsody was shot at Elstree Studios. The Confession films with Robert Asquwith feature Borehamwood High Street. Just down the road from Elsree Aerodrome is the small village of Letchmore Heath. The Village of the Damned was filmed there. The pub in Letchmore Heath is the Three Horseshoes. This pub was used for filming in many 60's series. At the start of the Summer Holiday film Cliff Richard and The Shadows are filmed at Aldenham bus works. In the Dirty Dozen there is a scene with Lee Marvin and Donald Sutherland at the entrance to an aerodrome. This is Hendon Aerodrome and nothing is left now to recognise this area. The gates of the aerodrome are now where the roundabout of Colindale Avenue meets Aerodrome Road. One interesting YouTube vid also shows the story of the Northern Heights Northern Line extension to Aldenham which never happened. Here are the YouTube clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJJHSsLhE24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anHLOwH2HWU&index=1&list=FLJWd7Y4N8DqaqT7LfEedCbw
"None of this got built" isn't strictly correct. Much of the viaduct supporting Brockley Hill station was constructed and as far as I know is still there in a field just north of the edge of Edgware.
Quite apart from the houses in Edgware, the Northern Line (along with most other tube lines) would be most unlikely to be extended now anyway, because the central part is full to bursting. If Green Belt policy is changed to permit major lumps of housing (here or elsewhere) such lumps will need a whole new railway, not a bit tacked on. (The upcoming tragedy of Barking Riverside will likely prove me right - or wrong).
That bit of the world is affectionately known as Avergerland, because of all the TV shows that were filmed there and did their location work in the area. Randall and Hopkirk, The Avengers, The Persuaders, The Saint, UFO etc etc And a lot of it has hardly changed a drop, barring about 10 times the number of cars parked outside people's houses.
Aldenham Reservoir is under threat because of the cost of remedial work required, not least due to the lorries thundering over the top of the earthen dyke 24/7/365. A deal was supposed to be done with land for housing in exchange for the repair works, but it's all a terrible hoo-hah.
Just north of Aldenham Reservoir is Elstree Aerodrome.
A public footpath from Letchmore Heath crosses the runway. At leadt one occasion I've seen walkers not look up for landing planes and cause a pilot to abort a landing.
