I suggest W14 Loughton - Woodford Bridge & W13 Leyton - Woodford via the existing W14.
So is it W for Walthamstow, Woodford or Wanstead?

dg writes: Walthamstow.
Yet another nostalgia moment for me - back in the 1950s/1960s the to-be-withdrawn 549 was running pretty much the same route as the 254, single-decker bus.
Excellent plain English distillation.
Regardless of the changes, why make make them so utterly confusing.

The 549/W14 change is unnecessarily complex, I think the 'new' W14 just has a handful of roads in common with the old version, either keep the 549 number and extend it to Whipps Cross Hospital as per the proposals, or withdraw both and introduce a new route like a W17.
Do Essex CC or Epping Forest DC subsidise the section of the 549 from Buckhurst Hill to Loughton?

dg writes: no.

I'm surprised TfL aren't using this opportunity to curtail the new W14 at the border, which would've been challenging with the 549 as it didn't otherwise have much reason to exist.
I can't help feeling the balance has tipped too far when a scheme to reduce traffic means no buses serving a main shopping street. A 500m walk will be quite a challenge for some Freedom Pass users.
Don’t understand why W stands for Walthamstow when only one of them goes there.
Removing buses from Walthamstow Village means that there’s no more need to maintain or replace the narrow buses used on the W12 at present. Watch out 394, H2 and R8.
I believe W is actually for Wood Green, check W1, W2, W3 for instance.
The original 1966 Bus Reshaping Plan intended that W would be for Wood Green, Woolwich and Wembley, but what actually transpired in 1968 was Wood Green and Walthamstow (the latter to support the newly opened Victoria line).
The Easy Read document of the consultation is pretty okay as a summary of the overly wordy page.

Regarding the 549/W14, one suspects that 'withdrawing' the W14 would get far more negative press than the rather elusive every 90 minute 549.
There was a W21 in Walthamstow from 1968 until 1981.

The faces are a nice touch, although I don't know what the uncoloured ones mean, as you have both smiling and frowning versions.
What are 'public realm aspirations'?
Walthamstow Village is frequently hailed as the paragon of LTNs by vocal supporters of the concept, so the “public realm aspirations” are almost certainly to make everyone walk or cycle. It seems entirely typical of this thinking that making car travel as difficult as possible is then followed up by deliberately withdrawing the best alternative - public transport - and seriously affecting those unable to walk or pedal. No wonder some conspiracy “theorists” claim it’s a means of controlling and circumscribing people’s mobility.
I think that all TfL consultations should be illustrated with smiling or sad faces.
It really helps to understand the impact on people (remember them?).
As matthieu hinted, they now are.

The only reason I can see the new "W14" number being kept is to avoid a local outcry story of a major route being withdrawn similar to the 13/82 situation as for the changes I'm still waiting for the extension of the W14 to Repton Park
Actually in the case of W13 and W14, W refers to Woodford. When introduced they were branded as 'Woodford hoppa' on publicity and vehicles. See here.
