Drat, I missed the Derby this year, I forgot all about it.
That looks a good healthy walk, with some fine views.
Great read today - looks like a great walk too.
Pleased you have covered this area. I think the opportunity to reach such lovely countryside for the price of 2 zone 6 Oyster journeys is generally missed by many people in South London.

It is a good area for walking (and cycling). It was even better before they built the M25 but at least around here it is mainly just the noise and not the visual intrusion that makes it less enjoyable than it used to be.

One of the rescue dog groups meets regularly on a Sunday at The Sportsman (or used to) after a walk. So you probably bumped into them.

Mrs Pedantic took the train and the dog to Tattenham Corner last Friday. Big Mistake as to date to do it on. Two days in the year when it is not a good idea and she picks one of them.
Although the 164A and 80A are both long gone, Metrobus's 420 still passes close to both Tattenham Corner and Walton-on-the-Hill on its way to Redhill and (on Sundays) Gatwick, but as it's a Surrey Council service and not TfL funded you can't use your Oyster.

I have not walked that area for a long time - indeed the M25 ended at Junction 8 last time I did, but I frequently drive past Mogador (either something from Middle Earth, or possibly something that sends you to sleep) as its my closest access to the M25
What a splendid walk. Thanks for taking us with you.
"this walk you will never do" ... true, I won't do it, partly because it's the "wrong" side of London for me, but mainly because these days I need tracks suitable for a mobility scooter

doesn't stop me thoroughly enjoying your post though
Welcome to my part of the country! You only just missed the Cock Inn at Headley: it changed its name about a fortnight ago.
My part of the country too! I've walked every path you mention dozens of times going back 50 years.

thank you for your great description and reminder that I must get back there soon.

Worth noting the Epsom Downs Racecourse is effectively on common land. "The Hill" where we plebs sit has free entry, and Derby Day is a wonderful day out.
This post... Horses for courses I guess.
Sounds like a great walk.
I visited a friend at Ashstead recently and she suggested a way home that would largely avoid the A25. The roads were a surprise to me, especially when the racecourse came into view. I knew it was 'nearby' but I never knew "that" close!
I can see myself going back for a return trip
When I was a kid, mumble-mumble years ago, my Dad sometimes took me to the races at Epsom. It was a wonderful day out, just the two of us. He was very scientific about deciding which horses to back, whereas I usually went for the colours and names that appealed. We aimed to win enough to pay for our day out, and sometimes did.
DG, a bit disappointed that you didn't try the kangaroo steak at The Sportsman, especially after I highlighted it in a previous comment.
You don't think I stop to eat on a day out, do you?
Apologies for the delay in replying. You very rarely mention food (some cake comments spring to mind) but I can't imagine that you're a Thermos and Tupperware man.

However, you cram so much into your days out then it stands to reason you must almost be eating on the move as you simply cannot afford the luxury of a refreshment break. Or are they simply not memorable?
Lunch is for timewasters.
Just thought I'd say that on your recommendation we did (most of) this walk yesterday. It was great - one of the best we've done for ages - helped by the weather, of course. We did a triangle from Tattenham Corner, to Headley, to Mogador then to Tadworth. Highly recommended!
This may well be a walk I'll never do, but I've just come back from a run following this route, and it was glorious, particularly the first half when the sun was out. Even before starting, there were lovely views over Chipstead Bottom from the train window. You often mention the views from the various forms of Oysterised transport you take - how about a post describing your favourite?

Thanks for the inspiration!
