for some time now, my employer's monthly staff meetings have included an update on 'what to do if HM the Queen dies immediately before, or during, our annual conference'.
This is a charity, the conference is mainly to discuss recent developments in nursing care. So not just a sales push for latest products.
Planning like this may have seemed slightly disrepectful but when news released made an event seem more likely, it's best to have a contingency plan.
Apres moi, le deluge...
I'm not sure that given Truss has reached the pinnacle of her profession without being able to give stateswomanlike speeches, that she's going to start now
Excellent summary, thank you.
Just when we need a strong Labour party to counter the neoliberal nightmare ahead of us, we have over-cautious, gutless Starmer, afraid to speak his mind or lay out an alternative vision for the country for fear of the Neoliberal Media Complex. This really is our darkest hour. There was at least hope in 1939.
I always wondered about the Olympics. I assume that there was a secret side note in bold italics, underlined saying "look, we know all about your royal family, but if any of them die during the games the show goes on as normal, understand?"
Reminds me of these Christmassy lines - "The world in solemn stillness stood...". Tomorrow will look after itself no doubt, for better of for worse - whether or not it belongs to us.
I have seen no better commentary, anywhere, on the current situation.
Agree with Sarah & Blue Witch. Great writing.

By mid winter I fear we’ll be looking back on this period as the good old days.
Not to denigrate any of your other recent blogs but a more on point piece of writing I haven’t seen over this period

Bravo sir
A superb piece of writing.

I did wonder if you might try your luck with The Queue late yesterday as the length seemed to reduce at the end. I went and queued yesterday - entered Southwark Park at 7am and exited Westminster Hall 10 hours later, two hours faster than the official estimate.
As a side note... "Only" five of the free to air channels in Republican France are showing the funeral live.

It's actually interesting viewing, because of the need for constant explanation of what's happening, and how it differs from a similar ceremony in France.
My thoughts go out to all those poor tat sellers caught short without stock. Due to the epidemic and subsequent Chinese manufacturing / shipping hernias, there won't have been many canny Del Boys with a lock up bulging with RIP QEII merch. I'm not sure how to feel about this because whilst it may be good for the environment, I can't approve of major Royal events being tasteful, well-ordered, and restrained. And the way the public is being kept at such physical distance on this occasion, while understandable, diminishes the experience.
It's been, if not a 'nice' or 'welcome' distraction, it's been a distraction nonetheless.
Now it's just going to be relentless.
amber - I had a friend who's past life involved the military. He said every month they had coffin carrying practice to be ready for when the call came.
Not much in the way of alternatives on the radio either
Fortunately, all this is going on whilst we're abroad on holiday.
Tim W. Ditto. I hope the main TV channels learnt from the drubbing they got for DofE coverage wheeling people in to the studio to say the same recollections of him. Have caught the main bits over the last few days, but unfortunately my arrival at £11 a night accommodation did not get to see the funeral.
Still Pai is a good place to spend a Bank Holiday.
Thank you for highlighting the Truss damage wave that appears to be incoming. We need continue to loudly challenge the iniquity of the policies of this government, and their failure to address important stuff such as the climate crisis, the failure of social care, and the NHS.
I confess to having something of a soft spot for the party conference season. I used to have to attend all of them for my job.

They are a decent crucible for ideas, or an opportunity for a piss up with your mates, or a bizarre gathering of cultists with you the unbeliever bearing witness, or comicon for politics nerds, or symbols of corporate lobbying largesse.

They do serve a purpose though, as the party faithful of all stripes get something of a direct line to what would be an (even more) distant ruling elite.

But yeah, maybe not now eh?
I note that the information about business in the Commons states that Thursday will "include a motion proposing that the House return from the conference recess on Tuesday 11 October"
Conference recess has now been shortened.

Post (and graphic) updated.
Quite accurate, I thought.
