REVIEW

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

*** 1/2 out of four stars

The setup: A boobytrapped room at Hogwarts threatens the school and its students.

What works: The special effects are incorporated into the story instead of being used just to show off.

What doesn't: A whiny, computer-generated elf will have some viewers cursing the legacy of Jar Jar Binks.

Great line: When Harry reports that he's hearing voices in his head, he's advised to keep it to himself. "Even in the wizardry world, hearing voices is not a good thing."

Rating: PG; scary moments, some creature violence and mild profanity

Having watched Harry Potter in the company of 2000 other people at the Odeon Leicester Square, the film raised loads of laughs from the audience, and rightly so.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film, at least until the banquet in final three minutes when director Chris Columbus served up the most hideous slab of cheese.

I didn't mind Dobby the house elf and I thought Kenneth Branagh played himself particularly well, but I did wish Ron had been allowed to pull a face other than his "I'm surprised and frightened" gurn at least once during the two and a half hours.

Now that we have to wait two years for the next instalment, maybe someone could make a spin-off film about Moaning Myrtle to tide us over until 2004.

Dobby is very pleased Sir, that you enjoyed the film Sir. Dobby won't have to bang his head on the nearest available object Sir. Unless the master would like that, Sir?

Your review made me laugh.

I just went to see the Deathly Hallows film. Same review could apply.
