I wouldn't say it was uncharacteristically commercial - how about the intrusive adverts that now appear on the TfL website or the hideous all-over adverts on certain buses?
Now that contactless cards are accepted throughout the network (and many people ditched their Oysters), it is a step backwards to have cash and Oyster fare.
The contactless card is now the more expensive option, unless you happen to have a spare topped up Oyster card not just for you, but everyone in your party.

Next step - Gamification of your cross river experience. Firing laser tag against other cabins (although shooting might not go well with an airline). Or competitive eye-spy, seeing who can spot the most dead rats floating down the river.
