Wow..up to the minute commentary!

Excellent.

Yes, DG, it is a damn shame and, yes, I did go round it, a few times.

And I don't like the sarky tone of your post.

Are they going to have to rename the local DLR station?

If the experience of South London is anything to go by the answer is no. Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936 but the name lives on. Croydon Airport closed in the fifties but buses still showed it as their destination until early in the 21st century.

P.S. I really liked your sarky tone.

This wouldn't be so bad if the ship had been built down there... why it was never returned 'home' I'll never know.

(disclaimer: I grew up in the town in which the Cutty Sark was built)

It is a shame, but it might be better for it to go this way.
I used to work with some of the riggers from the Cutty Sark, and their opinion was that by this point there was basically no way to keep the original ship. There had just been too much damage to the timbers and frame - especially the frame, actually. Restoration would be essentially just making a new hull.

If anything, maybe now they can make a replica with a clear conscience.

If tourists will pay to visit a fictional character's house (Juliet's house in fair Verona), I'm sure they'll pay to visit a replica Cutty Sark.

Well done Londoners - the usual load of negativity and ill informaed "anti" comment. What have you done to help?

Oh please DG, it is a beautiful ship like many of its age. Don't knock it just because of cynicism about tourists.

"What have you done to help"

I got the train down from King's Lynn with a 2 litre pepsi bottle full of water, but unfortunately it was too late.

My three year old is gutted - much like the ship. We go down the DLR to Greenwich frequently for the playground in the park, and the maritime museum. I had promised her we would go on the ship as soon as it re-opened.

At least your three-year-old's got something in common with the old boat, Chris...

Haven't you heard? The station will now be called "Starbucks for Maritime Greenwich".

Didn't someone put Gypsy Moth on a Pacific reef?

I think it's a shame but it's probably time to let it go. Give the poor old girl a dignified burial and move on.

I think Anonymous is the one with the sarky tone. And so what if the CS was like everyones' grandma's broom? It is still a focal point for learning about the tea clippers and the trade.

ps the Windsor refurb project still holds the, er, crown for spectacular leaps backwards.

There's a donations page available if you want to give them money to rebuild it
