Just one suggestion (and one guess) each, thanks.
Boroughs plus City?
If Scrumpy’s right and it is boroughs + city, “hamlet” could be the opposite of City
Based on the dubious status of some of the words, I conjecture that they all fit together crossword style. We "just" have to work out the shape of the grid, then fit the words in.
If it is boroughs then 3 - banter is an anagram of Barnet
Correct.
Now we're getting somewhere... |
The words don’t contain the highest value Scrabble letters: J K Q X Z
13) And "hamlet" plus a 'b' is an anagram of "Lambeth"
Meaning 1) is Hammersmith and Fulham
3 is Barnet
13 is indeed Lambeth But 1 is not Hammersmith and Fulham |
7 is Croydon minus a y
Will the missing letters spell a festive message? |
I've had my one suggestion. My one guess is 28) Brent.
In that case, might 14 be "Haringey"?
10 is Bromley minus the L
And 25 is Redbridge without a g.
9) eely = Bexley without B or X
In which case, I'll keep it local and assume that 11) is Enfield, but I'm still stumped as to the pattern.
18 is Lewisham
These are the 10 you've got right so far.
Without quite knowing why... 3) Barnet (banter) 7) Croydon (condor) 9) Bexley (eely) 10) Bromley (embryo) 11) Enfield (feline) 13) Lambeth (hamlet) 18) Lewisham (limewash) 14) Haringey (hearing) 25) Redbridge (reedbird) 28) Brent (tern) |
21 is Merton, with all the letters included. So I would guess that 21's entry to the overall clue is a space?
So far the missing letters we have are: 3 (space?) or nothing 7 Y 9 B X 10 L 11 D 13 B 14 Y 21 (space?) or nothing 25 G 28 B If I had to guess the overall answer, maybe these are the boroughs of London with their highest-scoring Scrabble letter removed? Not quite sure how it fits for those boroughs which have nothing removed though. |
33: Newham
Scrumpy you are clever.
Not worked out the logic yet, but I reckon 26 is Hounslow without L,Oand U. |
2) Harrow
20 could be Tower Hamlets with an O and an H missing
5) Greenwich - missing the W
Is it just "remove as few letters as possible to create a valid anagram" - which can be zero?
12 EALING |
Yes it is :)
For each of the 33 London boroughs, these are the longest words that can be made from their letters. |
Still to be guessed: aftermaths, braindamaged, commensuration, dance, holding, hyena, interests, listing, mountaintops, nonenlightened, octofoil, snout, thunderflash, towards, vinegar, washout
8) Dance => Camden
15) Hillingdon
31) Havering
4) Dagenham and Redbridge
dg writes: incorrect. |
is 20) meltwaters Waltham Forest
dg writes: no |
17 = Westminster
Damn!! Got confused with the football team. I got it now.
27) snout -> Sutton
The 11 remaining boroughs: Waltham Forest, Barking and Dagenham, Richmond upon Thames, Hackney, Islington, Kingston upon Thames, Kensington and Chelsea, City of London, Hammersmith and Fulham, Wandsworth and Southwark
16 is Hackney with the CK missing.
23) Kensington and Chelsea
4. Barking and Dagenham missing the G, K and H (I've got to at least get my own borough right!)
19 = Islington
I think 22 might be Kingston upon Thames.
6) Richmond-upon-Thames
The last five words: aftermaths, octofoil, thunderflash, towards, washout
24 - City of London (octofoil)
30) Wandsworth (towards)
29 - Hammersmith and Fulham
1. Hammersmith and Fulham
dg writes: incorrect. |
1 Waltham Forest
32 Southwark
That's the lot!

Are we all eligible to work for MI5 now?
