"I couldn't imagine a better eyesore to wipe from the map and start again" shurely shome mishtake? Ah, hang on, you have left Barking & Dagenham until last....

A record store? Was thou hoping to purchase one of the 33 or 45 rpm variety, or indeed a good old 78 perchance?

Did you make it to the 'hub of Barnet' that is Finchley? (Well, there is a North, East, West, Central and Church End to explore).

I learn a new word every day here. Recalcitrant.

I lived near Brent Cross when it first opened and the River Brent didn't look much better then! Whatever the steps were for, I don't think it was access for shoppers to relax!

will you be covering Colney Hatch Mental Asylum? On of the most amazing and beautiful builidngs in London, let alone Barnet.

couldn't believe that DG would ever overlook Colney Hatch - and a bit of research in his archive shows that he has already reviewed it on 10 March 2008, courtesy of a No 43 bus

Ah, so he has. It's an astonishing building - my missus lives there. It's not as expensive as you might think to rent. Nor is it that exclusive - the security is mostly for show, and the grounds are still open to the public (though most of the public don't seem to know it). New Southgate station is right next door - pop along and have a look. Or take the 43!

DG gives a very accurate picture of the large amount of traffic that passes around Brent Cross. In the space of half a mile there are two main arterial roads, the A41 Hendon Way and the A5 Edgware Road, the entrance and exit of the M1 plus of course the A406 North Circular Road.
As reported, there are plans for a massive development on the old railway land. This area will become hell on Earth. The development will bring even more cars and delivery lorries to this small piece of land.
Cyclists and pedestrians beware!

As one who used to get the 113 bus to Brent Cross as a teen, I think I can safely say that this place is what kicked off my lifelong dislike of shopping centres!!

Alas, I can't visit everywhere in a single random borough visit. With a borough as big as Barnet that meant missing several areas out, so I never got to Edgware or Finchley, for example. There are plenty of places in Barnet I've visited before, of course, so I tried not to visit them again. And I'm glad there are still several more places to go, because that'll give me lots more Barnet to dip into in the future.

Looks like the Cricklewood revamp has been kicked into the long grass but the Temple of Mammon may yet expand... http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-24028395-pound-45bn-brent-cross-revamp-is-set-to-shrink.do

Another lovely outing. Thanks, DG.

I grew up in Hampstead Garden Suburb and have visited Brent Cross since it opened in 1976. Descriptions are spot on and a treat to read. Thanks!

You have forgotten little bus 324 on your list of exciting routes to catch to Brent Cross!
