Hearing these sort of reports as the Torch has gone round the country has done a lot to dispel me of my Olympic cynicism.
So a good crowd turned up at Bow. According to one London radio station carrying the all to common negative reports about the Olympics, hardly anyone turned out at Greenwich.
Torch in Greenwich: 8am Saturday morning
Torch in Bow: 2pm Saturday afternoon
We figure quite a lot in the pictures you link to of the Bow community coming out to greet the flame. Except that we're not local, but live in Woodford. For various reasons it was the only time and place that we could see the flame as a whole family. But I suspect you are right, most people did appear to be local, not many headed back to the DLR station afterwards.
@ John: you can take it first hand from me that there were numerous crowds lining the SE London part of the torch relay, yesterday. Having a bike, I was able to see the procession in Well Hall Road, then cut across to Westmount Rd, and then get over to Shooters Hill for a third view, as the torch made its way towards Woolwich.

I'm hoping to see it pass through my 3 local Boroughs on Wednesday. In reverse order; Barnet (grew up there), Brent (currently staying there) Harrow (moving there in a couple of weeks)!
We had a good turn out in both Redhill and Reigate, with hundreds of people lining the route. Many businesses closed for an hour to allow their staff to go outside. They did a circular route round Redhill with a lunch stop, so I was able to see it twice. Most schools broke up early on Friday to allow children to go with their parents, and the sun came out. There was a festive atmosphere with a funfair in the park. A fun afternoon all round.
I saw it in Stratford outside the Discover centre where we were with our kids - about 15 mins before Diamond G. Was great to experience it. Next morning my 3 yr old boy mentioned the 'lady with the torch' and it took me a while to twig what he was talking about!
36,000 turned out in Crawley . . .

Also I saw the torch going through Bow last night on TV. Billy Mitchell was carrying it. Or was that Walford?
