That's a bit harsh. Shouldn't you go back another seven years when the worst they did was reach the last 16 (including one final, losing narrowly to Barcelona).
Fourteen consecutive last 16s or better, and also qualified for the Champions League in all 19 seasons as manager. That's not nostalgia, and whilst I'm not an Arsenal fan, I have every respect for him and his, by comparison, limited budget.
I will be sorry to see him go...

It's not all bad - within the last ten days they won 5-0 in the FA Cup against the league leaders*.

A few decent centre backs along the lines of Tony Adamas, David O'Leary, Martin Keown, Peter Simpson er.. Jeff Blockley, Willie Young or gulp Ian Ure might help.

It probably is time for a change but you just know if the next manager hasn't won the league within two years everyone will be moaning and they'll probably be replaced.

Sunderland crawled through this decade by changing managers when they show the slightest bit of incompetence. Doesn't make them any better, and this season is probably their last.
