Back in the 80s, before this bit was redeveloped, I used to visit St Georges Stairs on my weekly stroll with my grandad. The stairs were in a slightly different place and went straight down rather than parallel to the embankment. We would mark the point where the tide was in yellow crayon and compare week-by-week.

Upon reaching St Georges Square when taking the Thames path from Rotherhithe, you immediately know that you've entered Lewisham because of the uncared-for state of the public realm... streets in adjoining Southwark are cleaned daily, even at weekends, while the those in SE8 remain untouched, seemingly for months on end. I walk to Greenwich and back via Deptford Wharf nearly every Saturday and see the overflowing bins and same pieces of rubbish and fly-tipped junk littering the streets from week to week.

That link about beachcombing is absolutely fascinating, thank-you for sharing it. It’s amazing what can be found in just one small area.

What a depressing place! Not even any St George's flags slowly disintegrating from the lamp posts!!
