Having been there once (with the author of this review, on the occasion it refers to http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub2956.php) , I can't lament the closure of the "D k f Edinburgh" at all.

Very strange to think that this was all Essex as recently as 1965.

I think the Tudor house is just visible from a train approaching Plaistow from the east. It's over behind the right hand platform as the train just enters the station.

I've been meaning to visit for quite a while.

what about
Greengate Street; West Ham Tramway Offices. Plaistow Station; Ironwork on seats the letters LTSR (London Tilbury&Southend Railways) East London Cemetry;Stone monument to 16 german spies 1st world war also monument to 28 victims who died when HMS Albion was launched.
With thanks to Lawrence Rigal,s Website

You may have missed 'Midweek' on Radio 4 this morning, where they mentioned a story about munitions in the first World War. There was a need to produce acetone to produce cordite. Chaim Weizmann had developed a process, and was given the Nicholson's Gin Distillery at Three Mills to perfect the process. Conkers were used as a raw material. Chaim Weizmann was offered a knighthood for his work, but asked instead for support to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. This was issued as the Balfour Declaration of 1917.

I thought I knew a fair bit about Three Mills, but this story interested me.

I have the pleasure of working in Plaistow. I was excited when I saw that you were heading for my part of the world. I thought maybe you would turn up some wonders for me to go and have a peak at on my lunch time. Back to the drawing board for me!

Plaistow was my first London home, so I have a special fondness for it.
A couple of decent pubs (the Black Lion is the best), a nice section of the Greenway (always good elderflower), and my first sight of a London high street.
I feel like going back for a visit now, I wonder if that kebab shop still does exceptional felafels...

"a mainly hoodrat area, including several council estates",

Is this supposed to be an insult to the local people - it seems very rude. I can't find where it says that on Wiki anyway.
