I like Ipswich. My wife was brought up there, and her mother still lives near Christchurch Park. Thanks for scoping out the Gipping-side walk, it does sound rather less than wonderful.

I have fond memories of hitching from Cambridge to visit my then-fiancee. "You're in Whitton already!". And sometimes travelling to London on a coach from the Grey-Green coach station.
Town of my birth! We left over thirty years ago and as my parents recently moved back to Suffolk we took a trip to Ipswich on the train to see how much had changed.

Quite a bit as it happened - we spent most of the time pointing out what buildings used to be. The Ancient House is now a Lakeland (used to be a Waterstones), Andy's Records is now the Ipswich Mortgage Centre and the Corn Exchange appears to have been infiltrated by a Waitrose.

It had more charm than we remembered - lots of timber framed buildings, the gate to Wolsey's planned university to rival Oxford and Cambridge is still there despite being surrounded by a building site (and the crazy busy College Street & Star Lane. Christchurch Park is a peaceful place to spend time and St Nicholas Street and St Peter's Street have become a lot trendier - craft beer here too and quirky furniture shops.

What we all noticed was that the walk from the waterfront to the town was a bit unpleasant. It needs to be a bit more 'joined-up'.
Is there a link between all the places being visited these Thursdays?
DG, I would not recommend walking across the Orwell Bridge. The approaches from either side are dull and boring and it is a very noisy road. The view from the bridge is severely limited for pedestrians (unless you're planning to jump off). You'd be far better off getting the X7 bus service which conveniently stops opposite the railway station and travels non-stop from there over the bridge and on to the centre of Felixstowe.
[X7 timetable]

Which is handy if you've not featured Felixstowe on your blog before.
I can't get Bobbitshole out of my mind!

Thanks for the video link - the autoplay brought up another good one of Alton Estate
I'll give walking the Orwell Bridge a miss then, cheers. I've driven over it enough times.
Thankfully the DG comments section is back to normal service
Thank you DG. This is very useful. I hope to visit Ipswich soon. You’ve done my homework. Great stuff.
>>A separate classic exhibit represents "a portion of the Bass Rock", complete with dozens of squawking seabirds and fake guano

This sounds suspiciously like the one that used (is it still there?) to be in the Royal Scottish Museum in Chamber Street in Edinburgh
The Willis Building was in a picture round on yesterday's Pointless. How fortuitous.
Ipswitch should (seriously or as a gimmic) have some kind of museum of networking/internet technology, as it's almost called "IP Switch" :) :)
