No sign of the BBC transmitting station then? Not sure if it still operates, but it used to be the European Service station.

Will add a comment later.
a bit of a theme going on here ...

so hopefully more of that later

Thanks for going to Crowborough. It’s one of my favourite places as it’s between a friend’s house in Mayfield & Ashdown Forest so we often stopped there to eat or shop.

A half mile south of the station on the B2100 (Rotherfield Rd) there’s the Millbrook garden centre, great for coffee & cake, & opposite, where the stream crosses the road, a pretty walk across fields tracking Palesgate Lane towards the wood.

Ashdown Forest is a must-visit. It has wildlife, views, stunning walks & big open skies. It’s huge & only about 50 miles from London, but most of my friends don’t know where it is. Twice I’ve stayed a week in a rented cottage but even after a day trip I feel like I’ve been on holiday 😎
I recently made a similar day out to Crowborough with my usual lack of planning. When I asked a passerby outside the station for directions to the town centre she seemed to be suppressing an amused grin. I soon realised why as I slogged uphill for about half an hour.

I had a similar trek when I went to Tring by train though that was on the level as far as I remember.
I'll confess I thought you had made up the phrase Marilyn, but there it is hyperlinked in the Crowborough wikipedia entry!

I wonder how many of England's 175 hills with a prominence above 150 metres DG has managed? I assumes his rambling fortitude has taken him to the various UK national parks to tick off the most obvious choices, but he tends to blog more about urban areas. Perhaps more later.
Well, that wasn't what I expected to find in my feed reader!

DG visits my old home town, and walks a route I know very well!

Not lived there for many years now, and not visited for several (although family still live there) - but it seems nothing much has changed!
A friend lives there, so I go quite often. I still don’t really understand the layout of the place - apart from the shopping area, it still seems to consist of scattered hamlets. His house is even further from Crowborough station - if I’m going there by public transport, I get the train to Tunbridge Wells then the bus. It looks like that’s the way you went back...
Today’s post promptly proves my last sentence wrong...
Can't understand why I never noticed that Crowborough was so high up! I will definitely take a closer look. Thanks.
Shame you didn't spot any giraffes.
