Hereford does have one other notable product, so don't misbehave : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Air_Service
I haven't been for years but I really like Hereford; it's a pleasantly low-key sort of place to wander around and although the cathedral isn't the grandest in the country it is still very impressive.
Have you been to a Test match, DG? It was only £37 for a great day out yesterday, and will be just £20 at the Oval today to see a probable England win, Alistair Cook's last match (also probably - I hope he changes his mind) and (running certainty) James Anderson break the world record for wickets taken by a fast bowler.

Only seven wickets needed on a day five pitch with some atmospherics expected, so it might be over within an hour, but should reach the second session if the Indians don't just give up.

Interesting post, thank you.

Set me looking up the train timetable, seems a bit bizarre. Apparently only 5 through trains each each way weekdays, so you presumably went out on the 08.21, all the 4 others depart at 22 mins past the hour, 10am, 5, 6, 7 pm. That seems sensible but what about the return: I could only spot 5 again, 3 at ungodly hours in the morning and the latest at 3.14pm. Did you return on this one and was it £6 each way or £6 return, either way an absolute bargain as a 1st class single can be £169.50. One can apparently make quicker journeys with changes but a typical 3 and a half hours for little more than 100 miles indicates to me that rail companies don't really value Hereford.
The Cotswold line is a slow cross country service, albeit run as an extension of the London Oxford line. It is quicker (less than three hours) to go via Newport.

That said, five direct trains a day from London is a luxury some county towns/cathedral cities can only dream of.
I was there last week. I've yet to write it up.

The cider museum was well worth a visit - it did help that the B&B I stayed in was just around the corner.

There is also a very nice cafe in the All Saints church. I had the best bacon sandwich I've had this year in there.
Here in Somerset, cider is supposed to be the best. Unfortunatly they have forgotten that the essential ingredient is an orchard, so the apples now come from Hereford.
I've unfortunately only ever seen the inside of Hereford Record office, when I unsuccessfully searched for a 3x great grandfather (30 years on and he's still not found!) so it'son my list of Counties to Do Properly!
Even more so after reading this post!
We'd never been to Hereford until this spring.

We were completely underwhelmed by the place - and there was not a single eating place that we could find (either in the actual town or anywhere nearby) that could manage to serve something meat-free and wheat free (let alone actually have something on the menu).

Nowhere in the world have I ever had so much trouble finding something to eat. We ended up in a supermarket (also well below usual standards for a town this size) buying snacks as that was all they had that met requirements and didn't require heating.
We visited Hereford for the first time, last April. Our visit as somewhat clouded by the walk into town from the station. Not well sign posted. Also we hadn't checked on market day. That was the day,so it was difficult and in some cases impossible to see the architecture. The b&w house and bull were obscured by the large van and stall of a butcher, would you believe? One piece of good luck, the Poppies window waterfall was at the Cathedral, ending the day after our visit,so that was something!
# BlueWitch, my sympathies to you for not finding a menu to suit. I've often been in this predicament and have settled for some plain crisps and a glass of something at lunch. This time we were staying in Worcester where there are some great Italian restaurants, where they served gluten free pasta and pizzas.
while searching for a parking place in Hereford I drove past a cottage which claimed to be the birthplace of Nell Gwynne ... seems a long way from Covent Garden
I went there a few years ago as part of a project to photograph all the English cathedrals. I agree with most of what you have to say, and also with the commenter who said it’s a lot quicker to get there via Newport. When I was there, you could go up to the top of the cathedral tower on a guided visit, which was well worthwhile, and I agree that the people at the cathedral were generally very friendly and approachable. I thought the city was an excellent place to visit, and I’m glad you enjoyed it
I wonder if you will tell us the other county with another interesting travelogue tomorrow? Or will tomorrow be from another part of Herefordshire?
If you feel the need to go to Herefordshire again I can highly recommend going to Malvern, Worcs. and walking over the hills and over the border.
