Almost makes me wish I still lived in Maidenhead. And that's not a sentence I write very often...

The Stratford stop will be more useful for Kent commuters, who don't have great Underground links at the moment, but will Javelin services to Stratford and St Pancras by the time Crossrail opens.

The idea of it paralleling lots of existing routes is to take passengers off them. The Victoria was built to do this for the Piccadilly, and the orignal Jubilee for the Bakerloo.

And at Oxford Circus, not having a connection there is what reduces overcrowding. The Hanover Sq entrance will handle at least some travellers who would otherwise be clogging it up. The alternative - dumping more passengers into its underground passageways - would be madness.

Plus at Paddington you get a massive increase in eastbound train frequency. The Circle and H&C only have trains every 8.5 minutes each (and you need to choose line you're taking first), whereas Crossrail will have them every 2.5.

Except just as added a fourth lane to a motorway just means more cars fill it up, Crossrail will be full too, and the central line as busy as ever...

But i still think it's a great idea

No election this year apparently.
So it must have been my Crossrail Spell

Hiya - is this the place that one comes on Saturday in order to leave comments?

Think of crossrail as a brand-new tube line rather than heavy rail and it makes a lot more sense. The only difference is that it'll not have the claustrophobic carriages of the traditional tube gauge.

crossrail will also add capacity to the existing public transport network… which will support the increased level of housing and business in central London that is being built today and will continue to be built… London is becoming denser and denser in terms of population and works…

building crossover is a better option than finishing the A40 motorway round London as first planned…

that doesn’t mean that the northern line doesn’t need to be duplicated too… but little steps…

But they still left us out in Chelsea! When we gonna get something better than Sloane Sq and Earl's Court???

If crossrail can take pressure off the morning westbound central line at Liverpool Street it'll be brilliant.

Stephanie - I doubt Chelsea will ever get a new rail station - the Sloane Square people don't seem to like change - as per their decision on the Square improvements...

Luke, the sloane sq improvement was anything but! It would have caused us more grief than we already have travelling down king's road during the day - let alone at weekends. However, I digress, we have been promised (for the past 20 odd years) a new station - overland was mooted (poosibly an extension off Olympia) and then an underground extension was mooted. Nothing yet - however Ken Bates (chelsea FC) wanted a station off the Olympia line, which runs directly past stamford bridge, his request was turned down - even though it would have taken some stress off of fulham bdy, sloane sq and earls ct during match days!

Stephanie - I just think Sloane Square should be about more than traffic. It's a pity that local's put the car above pedestrians - the whole area is great for walking from place to place.

Hi Luke - we didn't put the car above the pedestrians - I personally would love something done about King's road and its traffic. But the fact is that the gyratory system as it is at present is a lot more efficent than the proposed system that would have caused even a further backlog down King's Rd and Sloane Street. The proposal to change symons street would have caused even more back log in draycot place and beyond. There were two proposals put forward - none of which addressed the issue of traffic in the area and would have added to it. I loved the look of the new sloane sq - but I and many others looked carefully at the impact it would have on traffic which is already at crisis point in the weekdays - even with the intro of the cong. charging.....weekends is heineous here and if you want to get anywhere you have to plan to leave early or spend 45 mins travelling 1 mile! And... forget it on match days!

What an interesting discussion! Isn’t the easiest way to solve the traffic problem is to make the environment more pedestrian friendly so more people get out of there car and walk? That way the buses would be able to move more freely and everyone would be able to get where they want more often!

It’s sounds that some people may be part of the problem more than they think!
