Peckham bus station was earlier the site Peckham bus garage, but a faulty roof brought a shift to a new location.
I'm pretty sure the 177 was a tram replacement, originally running right into town, but Thamesmead was only a twinkle in a town-planner's eye. |
I use this bus almost end-to-end on a weekly basis. I always notice the ever present road works on Plumstead High Street, Too Many Roundabouts going through Charlton, and the awkwardness of Cycleway 4 cutting in through East Greenwich. The ‘OFSTED GOOD PROVIDER’ tuition place in Deptford and the ‘CUT PRICE FIREWORKS AND DISCOUNT BARBER’ at Plumstead Corner always give me a laugh. The traffic through the high streets are a real drag at most times of the day, but the route becomes pleasantly quick at night.

Bruce… It was - replacing the 36 and 38 (two of the six that lated to the end of trams in Juky 1952) and originally ran from the Embankment, vua Blackfrioars Bridge and the Old Kent Road to Abbey Wood. Gradually cut back to Waterloo, then the Elephant, then new Cross, and finally Peckham in 1994

Today’s 177 is a rather sad reflection on the historic route which used to run from Abbey Wood Garage to Westminster (Horse Guards Parade). In the 1960s my uncle was a driver at AW and he would arrange for me to have a free return journey on his RT bus over the whole route whenever we were visiting. Happy days!

I seem to remember catching the 177 as part of a jaunt last year from Camberwell to the Thames Barrier. The bus ride was more exciting than the destination, if I'm honest, though we later went to Charlton House which was a cut above. I went down with Covid the next day, however.
