I was expecting a post about one-stop multi-zone journeys to focus on journeys crossing multiple zones in a single stop (such as the express Metropolitan trains), but this went in a novel direction instead.

z1→z2 journeys but with a z1-only fare albeit a multi-zone cap? [see here]

As Rich G has observed, some journeys between Zones 1 and 2 are only charged a Zone 1 fare - Mornington Crescent to Euston (Kings Cross) for example.
Longer one-stop journeys are possible - Finchley Road (Zone 2) to Wembley Park (Zone 4) on the Metropolitan Line for example.
I thought the Heathrow Free Travel Zone had been suspended, but apparently only for bus travel (thereby hitting people working there more than people travelling there)

Sneaky! I'd not heard of that zone crossing tariff before today!
So does that mean an off-peak journey starting and ending in z5 without entering z1 no longer costs £1.50 if it crosses multiple zones eg switching from one branch of the Piccadilly line to the other at Acton Town would now cost an extra 40p ie z5-z3 (20p) back to z5(20p)?

Cornish Cockney - I think you are charged per zone, not per boundary crossed, so a Zone 5-Zone 3- Zone 5 journey is only charged for three zones, not five.
(You'd also be wasting a lot of time, as the A10 bus can do the journey in less than half an hour)

Lmm: unless I'm mistaken, the Metropolitan line is the only Underground line to miss a numbered zone (even off peak, as Finchley Road is in Zone 2 and Wembley park in Zone 4). An article on such things would therefore be rather short, with that single example. On the other hand, enumerating the mainline services that call at two separated zones would be tedious.
(note that I have evaded a pedant trap, as the map shows the Northern Line passing through the "London Tram Fare Zone" without a call- but that is not a numbered Zone)
