I recall similarly heavy rain for our jubilee street party last year.
The Londonist at least attempts to round up some of the quirkier, free, cheap or more local events. They haven't got Time Out's resources but they're worth keeping in your bookmarks. No, I haven't got anything to do with them...
You should have had a quiet word with the umbrella lady.
Some people are completely oblivious to what`s going on around them
Here in Seattle the summers are famous for ruining festivals. The summer before last, the weather scored a perfect game - raining out every major festival without exception.

But this year the weather is oddly sunny, far sunnier and warmer than usual.

Thanks for those festival blog tours. That's exactly how I like to imagine the UK.
There is an ad banner at the top of this site - how did that happen?

Anyway, I was going to add that this event was publicised somewhere as I mentioned it to a colleague of mine who lives in N16 and thought her kids might enjoy going. I think it must have been in Metro - yes, on the weekly property page - Spotlight on Highgate. Not the most obvious location it has to be said...

And I'm surprised that I have been to a location before DG, Waterlow Park is indeed lovely and not a bad consolation prize when the Cemetry next door was the original aim of the visit. But after an hour's strolling, those of us not used to hilly terrain really felt the effects of the inclines!

Highgate is lovely, walking up the high st, turning around and seeing the Orbit is one memorable occasion. I have had the opportunity to explore the Holly Lodge Mansions recently and the expansive panoramic views of east, central and south London from the long gated avenues are breathtaking...
Highgate looks lovely but it's got no soul (and no decent restaurants)
In Pond Square there is also the wonderful Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution (founded 1839).
Much of it is only open to members or at least those enrolled on courses, but you can go in to look at art exhibitions in the Gallery, which is interesting anyway architecturally.

I've been on a couple of their courses but have no other connection with them! Closed on weekday mornings and all day on Mondays.
Hi DG,

I guessed it wasn't anything to do with your site, but I'm not tech-savvy enough to understand how it's appeared there out of the blue when I haven't changed any settings. Quite disconcerting - I think a chat with a more savvy acquaintance is called for... in the meantime you're welcome to delete this comment and the bit about the banner in my original comment.
