It's a long time since I was in West Bay - maybe 15 years or so - but I do remember the disused railway station there had become a cafe with a railway carriage on a piece of track alongside. I wonder if that's still there.

It is still there, Alan, and it does a very fine range of meals in the evening.

Colmer Hill was shown on the programme at the funeral of an aunt of mine. The essence of Dorset.

The choir stalls in the church at Symondsbury are decorated with charming carvings of exotic animals, including a hippopotamus.

West bay's pier and groynes to stop coastal erosion will be familiar to anyone who did a geography GCSE in the late 2000s or early 2010s.

When you were in Bridport it's sad that you didn't go a bit further, to Lyme Regis. Interesting cliffs, beach, etc., bluebell woods above, nice story about how the sewerage treatment facility is concealed under the seafront, fossils aplenty, including the famous "Ammonites' graveyard"..... And in a few 10s of metres you could have crossed in to Devon, too.

I must go and look for Hobbitses!

Happy memories of a time long past.
After visiting and then living and working in this area for many years in my late teens and through my 20s, I could never again live in a built-up area. I wouldn't want to live here these days mind, far too touristy and second homey. |
