OMG! This made me smile! Thanks.

Are you considering volunteering in 2012? You could trade collector pins, get official laminated credentials to wear around your neck, and perhaps a new t-shirt! Woo!
Your blog is gold-medal worthy.

My brain is empty now. :D

for some people it was the time of their lives : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11308934

Brilliant!

They were not short of volunteers in Sydney, although the 2000 uniform sounds nicer (but it was still appearing in thrift shops three years after the games, on the discount rack). In Sydney many public (civil) servants were seconded to the ranks of volunteers (at their usual pay), the alternative was being forced to take annual leave or leave without pay. In addition workers from many non-Games essential sectors were encouraged to take annual leave or to work from home during the games. This was because of fears of traffic congestion / over-crowding on public transport. About one year before the games rental prices started to increase all over the city (well not the West) as people started to move in for the big event. Many long-time tenants were evicted just before the games and their premises rented at steep prices for the period of the games... stay tuned Londoners.

Go for it DG! Think how much material you could gather - it would keep you in blog posts for months.

I've registered for the London Ambassador scheme.

I am a white, middle-class male in my 40s. Will this count against me ?

Of course signing up as a volunteer doesn't actually guarantee they'll place you during the Olympics. There's still the Paralympics to follow and you might be allocated a spot there...but no one will know or care! And you still get to keep your uniform, but with 'Paralympics' plastered all over it! Doesn't have the same appeal!
Saying that, I still wear my Winter Olympic jacket 8 years on, and it's of top notch quality. You do see a lot still wearing theirs round here every winter, and they are still good for striking up a conversation!
Go for it!! You'll probably never get the chance again!

I'd like to be a marshall on "High Street 2012" when the marathon passes my flat. Oh - hang on - no it wont...
