Naff registration plates on cars, ie AWE50M, are a very public demonstration of the trimuph of disposable income over common sense.
(IMHO of course)

Great post dg! I've always been curious about the social housing in places no one earning less than a six-figure salary (or trust fund) could otherwise afford to live.
Any sign of Mr Gruber?

R Garcia (nr Westway) top destination for Spanish nosh.

Victor, couldn't agree more, especially one relying on mis-reading numbers as letters etc.

dg there's a Woolworth in your 2005 pic

Up and down the Westway, in and out the lights.
.... oooh yes! When I think of Portobello Road I think of Paddington! I went there in anticipation of olde worlde antique shops on my first visit to London and was repulsed by the awful touristy market.

In other news, can anyone tell me where the Wombles actually hang out these days? I haven't managed to spot them either. And there was no woman selling birdseed on the steps of St Pauls - just signs saying 'no feeding the birds' :(
Portobello Road always makes me think of Brucie in Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
In the early 1960s I lived in a bedsit just off Portobello Rd (the fruit&veg part). Notting Hill has changed a lot since then, that was before the Carnival started and well before the eponymous film. Now the house where I lived, like most others in the area, has changed from badly converted rooms with shared bathroom to a gentrified 4storey family house. Portobello market hasn't really changed much, still the 3 divisions of antiques/food/junk, but it's much more of a tourist attraction so very crowded, and there are many more branches of multiple shops.
>>while one of the current residents is flush enough to own a Polo with the registration AWE50M.

No doubt to go with his other car registration AR5EH0
