Probably should mention Ditherington Flax Mill, even if you didn’t make it up there. Easily the most important building in Shrewsbury, if not the world!

I happened to have been there the day before you on a day trip from London. I hadn't done much research beforehand so missed some of the places you visited but have to agree about the views from the castle grounds and the beauty of St Mary's church.

I found the prison very interesting and it was quite chilling to be in the execution room where prisoners were hanged.

You did not mention SHREWSBURY SCHOOL, a senior independent which ranks alongside others such as Eton and Charterhouse. It had an "old boys" football club called Old Salopians FC which hosts its home fixtures at the King's House School Sports Ground in Chiswick, London.

A regular destination for London Midland Region's Merrymaker excursion trains back in the 1970s, including once on a Mystery trip when we were convinced it only became the destination when the train broke down there. We'd been a couple of weeks earlier when it was a "named" stop so were a liitle disappointed.

1 - too complex and too expensive compared with what, Crewe, Doncaster, Leeds, Manchester, Willesden Junction, perhaps the plan is to have a viable digital signaling alternative once the southern end of the ECML has been upgraded.

9 - notable how much Percy Thrower took control over his life choices, nowadays appearing on TV would be the end goal for many rather than a side job.

I think you'd very very hard-pressed to see Severn Tunnel Junction from the end of the platform at Shrewsbury, no matter how good your eyesight. It's a hundred miles away.

I wonder if you braved the '70 steps', one of the town's more unusual features - a steep medieval pathway from Pride Hill to the riverside, with (by my count) well over seventy steps, which is now an intriguing but slightly intimidating route buried deep under the Darwin shopping centre.

Sadly you were 25 years for the best tourist attraction… the Shrewsbury Quest where they recreated the Cadfael universe. Was a great day out as a kid! Still plenty of Cadfael stuff around the town though.

When we were there last year, a local came up to us and recommended we visited St Chad's churchyard and the 'grave' of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Great write up - looks wonderful. I normally put a dot on my Google Map when you visit somewhere to remind me to look up the article if I am in the area. This time I put down many dots for all the interesting places you mentioned as I don't want to miss any of them - I already had one for Scrooge's Grave (from one of the better film versions) and Flaxmill Maltings.

Just a shame it's a bit far from London for me to go just for a trip, but if I find myself nearby...

1. While the platform next to the prison has been dismantled, there is still a wall to protect the eyes of the good people of Shrewsbury from the ne’er-do-wells heading into prison.
