Added to the reading list - thank you.
I'm part way through. It is a good read.
As a frequent wanderer of the former water workings along the Lea, discovering parts of the New River everywhere North, walking the Green Way,I shall enjoy a book bringing everything together. A great review.
Mercenary is right. I used to go with my father to the MWB cash office at Leyton in the 50s to pay our water rates - 10/= a half year. Now £300 for the same house!
A note for next year's diary: Nick will be giving a talk on water in London to the Greenwich Industrial History Society on 16 May. Not sure whether it will be virtual (as all our talks have been over the past two years) or physical, but follow the Greenwich Industrial History group on Facebook for updates.
I've got tickets for a private talk he is giving on this subject later this year. The title was enough to have me sign up, and it looks like I'm not going to be disappointed!
Nick Higham gave a talk to the Tooting History Group in May and it was excellent. He was witty and informative and sold all the copies of the book he had bought with him. Well worth seeing in person if you get the chance. And the book is just as good as you say. Now who is going to write the geographical book on the lost rivers of London? Any suggestions?
water in London everywhere seeps from the cracks, and still every Tory has their next money-spinning privatisation project at the ready…
