It's sad about the Orbit. The time when a viewing tower would have been popular was when the Park was being built. To be able to see the major buildings rising and the layour taking shape would have been both interesting and instructive.

At the time, the window in the furniture department of John Lewis in Westfield was the best view on offer.
Don't know why they don't have a restaurant and/or pub up there. Might be more used then.
I love the Olympic Park. It’s great that the trees, grasses and flowers are so well maintained and that it’s possible to cycle round it as well as walk. It’s fantastic that it’s such a success. Thanks for the information about the birthday weekend price for the Orbit.
...ah the spirit of 2012 ...in the midst of austerity ...the bringing together of a nation ...the proposed legacy of a brighter, more inclusive future ...where people be inspired to take part in sport and greater well-being ...where the "feel-good" factor would wash over the doom & gloom. an Olympics that highlighted the great in Great Britain.

...the "Please do not write on these cubes" cubes...says it all, in more ways than one.
You are so lucky to have such a fantastic resource right on your doorstep. I would love to have such a park near to me.

I live at the other end of the Jubilee line so have no reason to traipse all the way over to Stratford.
The Orbit and slide still get reasonable numbers at the weekend. As does the Podium bar which is exceptionally busy during West Ham matches.
That'd explain the Heineken-ness of the exterior branding.
I still count myself lucky to work in the park. It has its flaws, but it's wonderful to have so much on my doorstep.

My picture seems to have ended up on one of those hoardings next to the orchard...
I see that the new road bridge that is to replace the current footbridge and connect Monier road to the park has already been assembled and is sat waiting at the edge of loop road before being craned into position.
Connected to this I notice a planning application has been put in by the Park and Thames Water to decommission the Old Ford water recycling plant which I think was a first of its kind in the UK and has been serving the park since the Olympics. It's not considered viable anymore.
I regularly run the Limehouse Cut path to Stratford and roam this Park in the process. I am struck everytime by the total lack of unity of the various components of the Park. Only when approaching the Westfield Shopping Center and the transit hubs do you get a sense of unity, including ethnic unity (or diversity, as the majority calls it). Coming back to the park, it is indeed interesting to count its many diverse and completely unrelated/unconnected architectural and natural components. An additional plus is the fact that it is constantly evolving as a large part of it is a building or rebuilding site. I love it (in small doses)
Re View Tube. It's under new management and being refurbished. On 6 April the manager and staff opened up especially to provide refreshments at the finishing point for the LDWA London Group's 28-mile Capital Challenge event, and they did very well. It should reopen very soon.
The second photo looks a lot like eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, which is our state flower. We’ve had an unusually wet winter and they are especially abundant here this year.
