Above the menswear shop, Alberts, used to be where the anarchists gathered.

I remember Tubby Isaacs from trips up to Petticoat and Brick Lanes. At one time (one of) the Tubby Isaacs seemed to get interviewed quite a bit on TV, (60s or 70s). Guess he wasn't the original if it was established in 1919. Surprised when I Googled "Tubby Isaacs" there were no links. Still now there will be from DG

And yes I did eat eels but what I now miss are just the cockles smothered in pepper and vinegar. Better than lobster.

I did some digging on that church and found that it was built in 1744 and used to be known as the "Prostitutes' Church". It was the last place that one of the victims of Jack the Ripper was seen alive.

i buy my trackies at that Sportec, though last time i went in, there was too much towel and not enough silk...

I was (un)fortunate enough to spend a year working in an office on Alie Street, just south of Braham Street, and remember wandering through Aldgate Barrs a few times while it was still open for business. It never had a good feeling about it and half the shops were closed, even then.

Did you know that the subway used to talk?

And Aldgate Barrs was OK when the building above was occupied, but it spent at least a couple of years empty - occupied again now though.

My parents lived in a flat in Goulston St back in the mid-70s for a time before us kids came along - a thoroughly depressing time/place, I'm told by my mum.

There's a useful page on the Aldgate Tower website (http://www.aldgatetower.co.uk/ go to the Aldagte Tower section) which flags up all the potential project planned in and around the area. The city certainly is expanding from the looks of it. Move slightly east and you have thousands of flats being chucked up. As a resident I don't know whether to feel flattered at the attention (and potential property hikes) or depressed at the onset of corporaet blandness.

I have it on good authority that the 'de-roundabouting' will happen a sooner than next year - more likely to happen in September 08.
