"The WC positions have been laid out so that they do not face Mecca."
Is that the Bingo Hall in Hackney?

well - let's hope it is better project managed than that tower in portsmouth...

On a similar note, I have noticed a fairly worrying trend where we have a consultation/public enquiry and promises made are simply later abandoned with no repercussions at all. For example, from today southbound DLR trains will not stop at West India Quay until 19.00 yet during the planning inquiry we were assured that this would only be happening during peak periods. If they can say one thing and do another it rather dilutes the point of this consultation.

Ah Mr Bond, you tease us with your comments made at consultations.

So is the toilet not facing Mecca thing some sort of standard for planning now? Or just in areas with a high muslim population? It's not something I've ever come across, but I clearly don't read planning documents with the same attention to detail as DG does...

"a new landmark for the capital in East London, where none exist currently"

Have they not heard of Canary Wharf?

Remember this is a personal Borisproject.

If it looks really bad when it's finished, I think this could cost him the election. Ken (or Oona) will use it to ridicule him. (Sample attack line: what has Boris actually done in four years, apart from scrapping the bendy bus, and building a hideous monstrosity?)

You mean you've got to walk down 500 blooming steps to get out again?

To me it looks like a single-eyed alien stooping to eat the ant-like humans scuttling below. You can almost see it begin it's destructive path towards the City!

It's both uglier and sillier than the Olympic logo, which I would have thought was hard to achieve... if you had a particularly daft movie where aliens came and fried various monuments with special rays, that's what the Eiffel Tower would look like at the end of the film.

I'm still convinced that the resourceful youth of Bow will dismantle it and sell it for scrap.

"even visible from Alexandra Palace" isn't saying much - you can see most of London from up there, including the stadium and aquatic centre
