Yesterday was a warning to us all how the combination of social restrictions and bad weather are going to make life much more difficult for the rest of this year, at least.

I had planned to go for my first (small) group cycle ride this year, but the heavy continuous rain put paid to that.
Is it really 2 years snce Bertie was born and you side-stepped the labyrinth?

Great dog/smoke photo.
2018: Frankly, I'd have liked to hear more about the tortoise carving. Art, or dinner?
yes, what timing .. marvellous.
I agree with Blue Witch - thanks for busting out the billowing greyhound! The second photo above it also looks like it could have come from a fashion show - I love the splash of blue on the man’s shirt.

Also DG - you might think me rather mad for doing this, but armed with an umbrella and waterproof jacket and shoes, I had a blast walking around the City of London Cemetery and Wanstead Park in the rain on Friday afternoon! I do love the autumn colours.
There is nothing stopping you (and certainly no law) that says you can’t explore the provinces or go see some hills right now. And it’s been like that since July.
An exquisite collection of snippets. I am sorry that you can't get out as much as you would like, but (as with earlier restrictions this year) you have used a wide range of resources and ingenuity to ensure that your readers continue to receive the full DG experience. Like any good craftsman, you make use of whatever is available.
The similar, and overused, 'If you can dream it, you can do it' is often cited to Walt Disney.

Like most things like this, it was never uttered by Walt Disney.

Instead the origin was a mural on a ride called Horizons at Epcot. The Disney Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald coined it, but even Disney (the corporation) themselves attribute it to Walt now! (which is insane).
Sorry the rain stopped play, but you always manage to find something interesting to blog about.
Heck you'd be able to make your shopping list sound interesting if you had to!
I really like this set of reminiscences, and the style of post; a welcome and unusual mix of the personal, professional and travelogue. Necessity being the mother of invention and all that.
2013: At the risk of pedantically adding to something from seven years ago...

The reason why Kendor Gardens (which is indeed remarkable only for being the same shape as the Northern line tunnels below) still has surprisingly nice flower beds is not because the Council do a good job, but because there's a network of local volunteers who maintain them. Which is rather nice, because it's not a particularly lovely park.
Luton bus station's changed even more since I was last there, when I was a regular coach traveller there in the late 1990s it was a dimly lit scary-looking place buried under a huge multistorey car park. It left me with a consistently poor (though maybe unfair) impression of the town.
Does John Lewis not sell shoes?
if your parents ruby wedding anniversary was 2001, that means next year is <snip>

dg writes: Sadly, no it doesn't.

At least it’s stopped raining for now, so hopefully you can go outdoors again.
John Lewis sells a lot of shoes. Perhaps they didn't sell many in 2007, or perhaps it was your colleague who was misinformed.
