The annual Spa Valley Railway/Camra beer and cider festival is highly recommended - food, drink and music at the stations and on the trains. More fun than a rail replacement bus any day (18 October this year). NB this is a visitor's recommendation, not an organiser's advert.
Ah! That explains it!
Seems the line was well used as a replacement. Makes one wonder if some of these heritage lines might merit some sort of regular service.

I think I originally wanted to take Spa Valley during my last visit to England, but turned out to take the "adjacent" Bluebell instead, partly because I planned the day out on a weekday.
The line was very lightly used as a replacement. Maybe six of us.
Perhaps the clue lies in the fact that the line was closed to traffic until the heritage group re-opened it. Because buses are quicker.
Not quite a bus replacement rail service then.
