When I am 2.5m tall I will edit the Millfields sign to read "Sunlit Public Footpath."
I initially read that sign as Until Public Footpath.

Who decided?, I bet it'll be a committee - so no one will be responsible.

Towpath - perhaps they ought to add 'risk of drowning'.
My Auntie Olive used to live one street back from Chatsworth Road. I remember visiting as a young child in the 70s. I wish I could remember it more. They moved out to Woodford Green.
You don't mention Chats Palace, a community arts centre in the old library in Chatsworth Road. A quick Google, however, confirmed that it's still there, which is good news. I went to many events there in the 70s and 80s.
"You should come for a walk with me more often."

I think "London walks with DG" would sell out pretty well, to be honest.
One 'NE' street name sign recently vanished from near the junction of Cassland Road and Kenton Road. The one on the opposite corner of that junction is still there, in full colour!
Nice to have you in my neck of the woods, DG. I've lived close to Chatsworth Road for 20 years and the change over that time has been pretty amazing - although most of it happened in the last 5 or 6. The abandoned tobacconists has survived reasonably unscathed throughout, although it used to have a selection of amazing supersized promotional Wrigley’s gum packets gathering dust in the window. They disappeared a few years ago and I feel a small pang of regret about this on a regular basis.

NB there is an NE street sign on the corner of Elderfield and Clifden Road, should anyone care..

And, yes, I look at the “unlit path” sign in Millfields Park several times a week and wonder. In fact, I ran past it only this morning.
I hadn’t heard of NE London postcodes before - I love the fact that the street sign has been incorrect for 153 years.
The 'Unlit Public Footpath' sign is because of a recent spate of muggings along the towpath. The Canal and River Trust say the path can't be lit as that would disturb the wildlife, so these signs are an attempt to warn the unwary without having to put up a sign saying 'Caution: Muggers'.
"Walks with DG" - I hope this becomes a new regular feature.
It's the arrogance of graffiti painters that I don't like. There's a perfectly nice brick wall that belongs to someone that someone else has decided they have the right to cover with painted nonsense. It's also arrogant that this kind of display invades our public space, giving passers-by no option but to look at it, unlike in a gallery or indoor space where we have a choice. It's particularly sad that nearly all the buildings on Fish Island have been ruined in this way.
Interesting to hear about 'London NE' street signs. I wonder if any exist for the other defunct postal district 'London S'.
There have never been any NE postcodes in London. There was once an NE postal district (hence the signs), but the concept of postcode (or postal code) did not exist until about 1959.
Unless you have a large piece of metal holding one of your leg bones together, you're unlikely to be able to increment the cycle counter by walking past it - they're triggered by a buried magnetic loop. There's another on the bridge over Ruckholt Road (near the massive LEYTON sign) that's also Quietway branded, despite not being on one.
A few years ago the tobacconist was temporarily open for an art show. I can't remember much about the art as nosing around the time-capsule of a shop untouched since the 80s was far more interesting.
As the NE district included Bethnal Green, and would have had a NE1 'head district' on the edge of the City when they added the numbers (in 1917), it is highly likely that Bow would have been NE3, and Forest Gate would have been E3, all other things being equal.
As Bow was never in the NE postal district, it is exceptionally unlikely it would have been NE3.
Today's post need a 'please empty your brain below' at the top!
I question whether the Canal and River Trust have such (unelected) power that it is able to insist that the health and safety of wildlife is more important than that of people.
C23 has now been added to the TfL cycle map.

What extraordinary timing :)
CRT have the far more unassailable justification of having no money to spare for towpath lighting.
also CS23 (and others).
[press release]
I know of one S (south) on a street name sign. That is high up on The Pavement (a road name) at Clapham Common. I am sure I read that there were two but the second eludes me. If anyone knows of a 'Borough of Deptford' street name I would love to know where it is.
"Percy Ingle isn't going anywhere."

Oops, less than a year later, all stores to close.
