I think you've just summed up why it's such a reliably interesting read!
Hi DG, the one omission that fascinates me is when did you do a particular 'trip', or 'content gathering exercise' for the purpose of writing a blog post in that nine times out of ten there is no reference to the date it took place, and, how long it took, door-to-door.

The latter information gives an idea of how challenging it was and can be used as a comparison tool ! The former is just for curiosity. Do you 'go out' more often on the weekends vs midweek, and is there a day where you just pull the duvet back over you and chill out. This data would answer the naysayers who think that there is a team of you, not that you care. Your blog, your rules as is commonly said.

A couple of years ago you said that you were running out of things to blog about. Since then it seems that the variety has increased, the quality remains amazing and you are my first and sometimes only port of call each morning.

And, yes, some posts do not excite me but these are few and far between, but at least do increase my general knowledge, and I recognise that you are letting off steam with your marketing bombardment posts. Oh, and as you mentioned it I did discover you via a transport related entry.
Indeed. You write in an engaging manner, on a variety of topics, which are of interest to your audience. What is not to like? Thank you.
An interesting assessment of what you do,DG. Just keep on doing what you're doing and you're assured of this follower. Have a cuppa to celebrate! 👏🏻👏🏻
Do you put in 35 hours a week for us now, enough to be full time?
And always an enjoyable well written read...
The impressive thing is you do go to these places - sometimes places I wouldn’t bother about if they were five minutes walk away never mind across the other side of London - but that’s what makes it interesting. You go to places so I don’t have to!
I don't care how you (or anyone else) wants to label your blog. I look forward to reading the latest installment on whatever topic, at my desk as I eat my breakfast.
An interesting and informative post each day.
I love reading your blog. Thank you for such an entertaining and informative daily read.

I've even been inspired to visit a few places myself, not just the touristy bits - I also like to get out and about and see some of the detail.
Adding to others' congratulations ......I've learned a lot from your blogs since I stumbled on your site on the run up to the Olympics, and I really enjoy your engaging writing style even on the subjects that are not on my usual radar (eg stately homes).

Keep up the good work!
Cheers... but what is it all about?
Thank you. Your musings lighten my tedious commute on the 53 each morning, especially the slow crawl over Blackheath. And alas, today is particularly slow....
There are very, very few things I want to do each day. In fact, reading your blog is probably the only one. Thanks for making it possible. I really can't imagine the actual amount of effort that goes into creating it each day and doing the background work. My own attempts at blogs have started out with the best of intentions but rarely survived for more than a few days.
Cheers... but what is it all about?
and of course most of us follow you because we are interested in similar things.
What really intrigues me is why we are interested in these things and not the 101 other things we could be interested in.
Is it genetic? Is it something that happened to us aged 2? Is it what our friends were doing aged 15?
Yo DG,

Do you ever wonder what your life would be like if you didn’t write a blog?
I came across your blog quite a few years ago and it is still the only blog I ever read. I especially enjoy your transport related blogs. Thank you for all the interesting (and detailed) articles over the years, I've learnt a lot.
TomH says it for me in his first three sentences.
I also read the blog of a teacher trainer friend who is currently travelling around Myanmar, wondering at the strangeness of it all and I find myself wishing it was DG in her footsteps.
What's it all about? Alfie!
Reading DG blog is one of the few actions I undertake every day. The blog is written in such an entertaining way that all subjects are interesting.
The amount of information about London/Transport which I have picked up over the years has been a real treat over the years.
To answer, if at least partly, the question asked:
lost worlds; neglected spots; diversions; counts (especially the latter).
It is indeed a pleasure to read your blog, particularly when you visit and write about those parts of London that I, as an occasional visitor to London, never have read or heard about!
It's the quirkiness and excellent writing that keeps me coming back each day. I never know what I'll discover, and you have a knack of making what appears on the surface to be terribly mundane, very interesting.

And maybe tomorrow there'll be kittens!
I read your blog about visiting the Isle of Wight, and later that year my partner and I spent a lovely week in Ventnor. Thanks!
Fully agree with all the compliments and comments!
For me, the day would not be complete without my daily dg post.....on any topic.
What's it all about? Simple - "curiosity", that indefinable thing getting us out of bed when we don't have to, that fear of when we're tired of London, we're tired of life, the thirst to find another "I didn't know that".

Thanks mate.
In a country going mad, this blog is a ray of sunlight and a reminder that there are still fundamentally decent human beings out there.
I don't like over-definition. DG is a blog I like to read. Period.
Ah yes but how many of your last one hundred blogposts were about or contained statistics? I'd check for myself but I want to get full value for my subscription.

Seriously though you are an excellent and informative writer. Diamond Geezer and Broadsheet.ie are the only websites that I visit every day without fail.
Really DG it's about you, and about us, and our city, that's why we like it.
Perhaps your blog is an extension of you keeping a diary, then like other records that are maintained for several years, it is the record itself that becomes interesting, as it hasn't been reinterpreted by someone in the future who wasn't there.

At some point in the future you may look at it all, wonder what the point of it was, and stop, perhaps you've seen whats happened with flickr (plus the disappearance of stuff that was once part of everyday life, like CD players, phone boxes and ticket offices) and it's all been randomly deleted.
I love the insatiable curiosity about stuff - what's there, with a bit of why, and a bit of how - and recording it in such a readable way.

Oh, and it's the sort of thing that makes me want to visit Haddon Corner just for the sake of it, even though I suspect there is nothing much there except for a sign saying Haddon Corner.
...and without this blog there be no Grumpy Anon haha ...keep up the good work!
What is it about..? I think that others have correctly identified that it's a reflection of the curiosity re: where/who/how/why as related to the world around you..and us.
Patreon. Seriously. I'd contribute.

To the other commentators (not DG): think how much you would be prepared to pay for this sort of content if it were in a magazine, say, 'DG monthly' or whatever.

To DG: Maybe it's not your thing, maybe you'd not want to feel obligated to your readership. Ever considered it?

dg writes: It's not my thing.
Still no kittens. *sigh*
Ooooh! That must be the Mystery Count! The number of kittens appearing in the blog!

dg writes: As I told you last year, No.
It’s all about You - giving, it’s all about Us -receiving, it’s all about life and feelings, humour, and some wondering - enjoyment all round, really. Whether life has any point at all this is part of my daily bit of it. So - many thanks, whatever you might think it’s all about.
It's about good writing, about things you are interested in. The combination of those two things means that that outcome is interesting to read, whatever the topic.
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?
About 18 months ago I stopped reading this blog, although it wasn’t a conscious decision. Perhaps after 13 years I just needed a break. But now I’m back, because there’s nothing quite like Diamond Geezer.
It’s all about making the most of living in London, and sharing it with us all. Thank you!
No one else writes like you. So it is you. I like reading you.
