A lovely area, that you've reflected beautifully in fine words and photos.
Thank you. |
Yes, a glorious part of England, especially in the sort of spring weather we have had recently. I have fond memories of summer trips incorporating Salter's Steamers that involved taking the train to Henley, a pub lunch in the town, and then taking a scheduled Salter's boat up river to Reading for the return to London.
It is possible, with manageable gaps, overnight stays and careful planning, to work your way up the Thames from Greenwich to Oxford, using various passenger boats spread over a a number of days. |
There used to be an easement defined in the routeing guide that would allow people to travel on the Thames Path between stations with a ticket to the farthest (most expensive) station. This appears to have changed to an "inter-availability arrangement" for off-peak day return tickets only - per http://nfm16.nationalrail.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/TheManual/1427.html. There is no need to buy two tickets. Unfortunately this bit of the National Fares Manual is a nuisance to get hold of so not sure if it is still true.

I got ridicilously excited when I first spotted the rather nice K1 telephone kiosk on the Boulter's Lock island, but imagine I might be the only one.

Ah, my childhood haunts.
I believe you have a picture of the piece of riverbank from which I fell (backwards, while walking backwards) and nearly drowned in mid-winter at the age of 8 or 9 there. More eroded than then, but it's a long long time ago. |
I walked the whole Thames Path about 10 years ago. The stretches from Maidenhead to Henley were (and still) are my favoruite stretches of the whole path. It is a lovely walk.

For some reason I had it in my head that you'd done the whole Thames Path already. Is there a compendium of the bits you have done?

Lovely post about a lovely place.
The pub at Bourne End you mention (The Bounty) is only accessible by river or foot, so their beer is delivered by barge. |
