Oh. Wow.

But could you add canals?

Excellent research. But why..?
I’m still pondering what the most recent addition to this list might have been; I’d guess at HS1 or one of the northeasterly bits of the M25?
and how many have you travelled on DG ?
I wonder what is the main cause of the fact of more boundary crossings north of the river than south of it. The course of the river? The better development near the northern boundary? The fact that London is itself to the south of the country, so most traffic goes north? Or anything else?

dg writes: A key factor is that the boundary north of the river is 60% longer than the boundary south of the river.
wonder how many of these points are NOT cover by CCTV nowadays
The M25 is in places almost as intimately linked with the boundary as the Grand Union canal. Surely the total number of times the M25 crosses should be an even number?

dg writes: It's because the boundary at J4 crosses a connecting spur, not the orbital motorway itself.
Sighs...and all the points where 'tolls' will be introduced...and very soon.
Four 5-mile-stretches with no listed crossings:
NW: Chiltern main line → A404 Batchworth
NE: A1112 Hainault → M25 Noak Hill
SE: Knockholt → A233 Westerham Hill
S: A233 Westerham Hill → Oxted line
Graham, The A13 across Rainham Marshes is fairly recent (late 90s) so probably the newest road (the A1306 follows its old path)
Another fascinating list here!

I'm pretty sure I've used all the listed crossings into Essex (including Thurrock), at least. And over three quarters of the railway lines...
M25 completed 1986
A13 Wennington bypass 1997
HS1 2007
It might be interesting to know how many traffic lanes or tracks cross the boundary at each of these points. On second thoughts, that information would probably attract a chorus of "and your point is... ?". That is my excuse for not researching it, anyway.

Is there any official status to names such as "Southbury Loop" and "Hertford Loop"? I know exactly what each of them means, but why are they called that (rather than, say, Watton Loop or Turkey Street Loop)?
The motorways going clockwise from the M1 was a question in round 2 (name the fourth item) when I was on Only Connect. Happily, my colleagues and I got it...
I like how well this illustrates our road-numbering system.

Clockwise from top left: A1, A10, M11, A12, A13

South of the river: A2, A20, A21, A22, A23, A24

n.b. A21 = M25 (J4)
A timely post - This year’s project so far has been walking into London along each of the single-digit A roads. A1-A4 done now. Some of them written up.
