A friend of mine was able in 1988 on the 21st of June, to ride his motorcycle at over 200mph on the open road.
European Championship 1988
German Vs Netherlands 1-2

He only knew the score when he got home.

I love going to work on Christmas day at 07.00. Its a drive of 34 miles, last Christmas I saw two cars, and did it 20 minutes quicker than normal without rushing/speeding (half term holidays I knock 10 minutes of the journey).

Last night we took Oscar for a walk, there was no need to keep slipping him back on his lead, all the other dogs must have been watching the football!

Yes, I felt that "London belonged to us" too. I'm a cab driver, and it was one of the weirdest nights. When the game was on it was almost eerie. The very low number of white males around was very noticeable. I'd say the road traffic levels during the game were akin to what they were at 5 on a Sunday Morning. I enjoyed turning into the South Carriage Drive in Hyde Park from Princes Gate, on such a fine evening, and witnessing just a few families out for a walk.

I was coming back from Norwich to Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. It was so odd, the bus station had around 3 people in it, the bus itself (usually fairly busy) had just me and my friend and the whole way back down the (ordinarily) busy A47 I think we saw about 20 cars in 25 miles. By the time I got back the match was over and the town was filled with yobs in nylon.

Come ON England !

I thought all the flags were because England had won the cricket twenty20 world cup.

It was bliss - Epping forest to ourselves - and then into a certain supermarket at Loughton - what a joy - alone in empty aisles. Then to stand on Loughton station for 7 minutes listening to birdsong and the occasional Central line train. It is the first time I've ever been aware of even any good reason for that wretched game!

When is the next match - I might go out for a drive!

Missed it entirely, the son got married Saturday afternoon in Wales. One of the best men did announce the half time score though as part of his speech, resulting in a minor cheer. Nothing like the cheer for the bride & groom's first dance though!

Glad you had a nice peaceful walk DG.

Christine

You really don't like football & it's supporters do you? Yet, after your disdainful report from outside the Cup Final, and now this you can't really leave the subject alone can you? And as for the view that "umpteen poor Newham folk have gathered to bet their benefits on the outcome" I don't really know where to begin. I know Stratford isn't Knightsbridge, but to assume that people in a betting shop there must be wasting away their benefit cheques is an assumption of fairly large proportions.

If, as seems clear from the tone of your posts on the subject, you have such distaste for the subject, you'd be better off ignoring it and leaving your prejudices & perceptions behind.

You've read far more into my betting shop sentence than I ever deliberately added. I never assumed (or stated) that everybody in the bookies was of a certain type, nor that their money was being wasted. But the contrast between the betting shop's clientèle and that of the bar nextdoor was striking.

I made the most of the England curfew as well and intend to do the same everytime they play.

I am having "issues" with the t-shirts and signs that state "Eng-er-land"...it grates on my not so perfect English skills. Per-Lease!

31 days of it, assuming the England team last.

DG - the contrast may have been striking, but it certainly read like you'd made some fairly big assumptions about the type of person in that betting shop. I won't labour the point, I think I'll just have to avoid your footy posts in future. Deliberate or not, they have a whiff of snobbery about them.

Well that's me told. I should warn you that I can be unintentionally objectionable in any post, not just those about football.
