Happy Mid-Year, dg!
Good one DG, you should have got it on wiki.
MID-YEAR'S DAY
by W.T.McGonagall

In Scottish highlands folk do say
"Rod yer chanter mid-year's day"
A bagpipe fanfare is the reason
It heralds the Haggis-hunting season*.

*40 days before grouse
But when was Midyear celebrated when the year began on March 25th? And why has DG quoted Wikipedia so accurately, but stripped out all the pictures? I particularly enjoyed the bullock picture, with all the happy children's faces.
I see you posted this interesting account of mid year at 13.00 but I am reading it at 8.50! I will check the details of the Lincolnshire celebrations with my husband as he grew up in the county and doubtless took part , perhaps he could revive them for me today.
I wonder how it's celebrated in Midsomer Norton. Or in Middlesex.

Or by all the proud residents of Midtown.
A different font for the underlined headlines, and a section for notes, I assume this is by a parallel DG.

I wish everyone a happy half year.
The page "Westmoretonhampton" does not exist. You can ask for it to be created.

There were no results matching the query.
this is what happens when DG has too much time on his hands - he starts hallucinating
This sort of quirky stuff is right up my slightly hippy street!!
In France it is known as "Le jour du midi d'année". I never understand why.

Surely, "le jour du midi d'an" or, alternatively, "la journée du midi d'année?
And why d'année and not de l'année?
"those on zero hour contracts will be allowed to knock off for ten minutes" ...yes and be deducted anywhere upto 4hours pay.
Rather curiously, Mittejahretag is celebrated in the former West Berlin but not in the former East Berlin. The communist government did not approve of this traditional celebration because of its religious origin. Old habits die hard.
In Finland we celebrate all prime-fractional divisions of the year up to and including 11ths.

Next month is uttocluttialätenati (7/11ths night).
After driving the two, nearly three, hours to Westmoretonhampton I found the festival had succumbed to the usual commercialisation of others. I remember going to the first one way, way back in 1980 and seeing the thrill on children's faces as 'Mr Midyear' chased them through the park. Things are just not the same any more. Two ice cream vans, a roundabout sans music and some bitter xenophobia was all I saw. A picture of middle England of the 21st Century.
Thank you so much. For years I had believed that I was unique in wishing friends a Happy New Half Year at 1pm BST on 2nd July (adjusted for leap years when appropriate). I encourage them to have a half-hearted second attempt at keeping half of the resolutions they failed to keep in January. Congratulations on reaching so far back. I had struggled to get beyond the complexities of 1752 resulting from the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750.
Pedantic: C'est tout à fait evident.

Jour, not journée, because it is being counted as an individual item, regardless of its duration. And année because you are considering the year as a stretched-out span of time.

(Just how the south compass point gets involved is of course another question altogether).
