How can Tower Hamlets have passed Islington for population density when Islongton's population grew at a faster rate? Also, unless you have a typo, 16999 > 16790.

Not inconsistent: Tower Hamlets population density passed Islington in 2019 but the latter is now closing the gap, slightly, by having a 0.1% greater increase over the past year.
UK population estimates are a bit hit and miss. The EU settled status scheme assumed 3m EU nationals were resident in the UK but to date over 5.5m have applied. It will be interesting to see if any figures are released in relation to Covid vaccinations comparing the number of people registered with GPs and numbers vaccinated
Regarding the 5.5m figure. I suspect this may be slightly misleading because of the churn of people. Anecdotally, I know two people who applied and received settled status and have now left the UK.
Too many people!! And they all seem to want to walk past my bedroom window in the early hours of a weekend morning, talking loudly into their phones!
I'm guessing that Portsmouth is the next densest place, after certain London boroughs.

(dg nods)
Further context to the population density - even the most densely populated bits of London are still much less than Paris (2m people @ a density of 20,755 per km2) and less than half that of Mumbai (32,303) or Manila (41,515)
